Hand dryer etiquettes

I was in the toilets of a shall cafe and a guy was there before me. He was at the stage of washing his hands when i was using the urinal. i noticed just 1 hand dryer. I thought to myself 'grand, plenty of time to get the pee done, hands washed, dried and out that door". The hand dryer was one of the older models with the metal button and gives maybe 30 seconds + to dry the hands.

As i finished at the urinal and made my way to the sink, he made his way to the hand dryer. Normally when encounter this stage of the toilet process, i'll put on a bit of extra soap and wash my hands for a longer period of time. don't rush the person in front and let them get the heat of one full dry.

the dryer stops so i shake the excess water from my hands getting ready for my turn and what does the guy do? he presses the button for a second dry...mother *ucker. he stayed the full length of that second dry as well.

I normally wash hands, dry for the full process unless there's someone soon after me or it's busy then i'll dry sometimes half the time.

Anyone here just dry for as long as they want or follow a hand dryer code of decency?

You should have smashed his head off the dryer

Agreed. That would have dried his hands nice and quick.

Just stick your hands it there under it beside his and smile at him

Er, is this the kinda thing people really get annoyed about?

Wet hands attract bacteria. He was totally right to dry his hands properly after washing them.

I think it's just a lot of hot air

Isn't the rule in the pub you just rinse you're hands and wipe them on your pants?

Unless one is actually pissing on one's hands?

OP I think you might have misread the situation. Sounds to me a lot like he was cruising.

Or none at all, as the case may be

His hands were obviously still wet.

    Just wait your turn.

i noticed a power socket where the dryer is connected. next time i'm going in for a coffee i'll have a sheet printed with 'out of order' on it, turn off the power socket and stick it on the dryer. i'll wait in that cafe for that guy to use the toilets next time...then lets see who smirks in that mirror

I never use the hand-dryers in public toilets, they just spray particalised faecal matter (other peoples' particalised faecal matter!) onto one's hands.

Plus paper towels are more environmentally friendly than hot air blowers and work quicker.

those slow dryers are like a cat yawning on your hand

OP, you should have pulled his pants down, and dried your hands on his jocks. That'll learn him.

Hmm, that sounds like something I could get behind, specially if the toilets were gender neutral! :p

(though half the time I'm not even looking at the door signs anyway, nearest door will do, never had anyone complain yet :) )

To answer the OP, I couldn't care if there was a full bar standing behind me, I assume that each and every one of them would take their time to wash and dry their hands properly after using the facilities, as one should do of course. Walking out of the toilet with wet hands? Nah, wouldn't be my thing really.

If it's any consolation OP those driers are pretty much the most bacteria laiden things on the planet, they're recycling heated horrible bathroom air, vapor particles from every toilet flush. The longer you stand in front of them the longer you're inhaling the concentrated, heated up grossness and spraying it over your hands and clothes. Much healthier to wipe your wet hands on your jacket or use toilet paper to dry them.

I'd rank this just under Mr Orange's witty anecdote from Reservoir Dogs in the category "Public Toilet Anecdotes."

    9/10. Good job!

All this fear of bacteria is annoying.

There is bacteria EVERYWHERE and we will be dead without some of them.

Also, men should be able to pee without getting it all over their hands and not needing to wash them rather than going through the pretence of washing hands with cheap soap and cold water.

Thanks for that. I didn't realize they were that disgusting. Also they say the new gen of dryers are worse than the old one...that's nuts.

'Wipe and go' seems to be the way forward so

Yeah I'd agree somewhat, but I guess there's no point being exposed to extra bacteria. When I go to a cafe I'll pay for the food and drink and then go to the bathroom. If I didn't have to pee I would still go to the bathroom after handling the cash though. I use my sleeve to open a door if it's a handle on it leaving the bathroom also.

TBH I wouldn't pay much heed to something as small and petty, dry off with tissue and move on.

You should've dried your hands on the back of his jumper/jacket.

On another note, there's nothing worse than those wheezy old farts of hand driers that take forever to dry your hands.

Use toilet paper to dry them or just dry them in the back of his shirt

To wash them. That's a bit extreme.

Wow, you seriously over think things! If someone queues behind you at a shop or atm would you rush just to follow some code??

If the guy needed an extra 30 seconds for an old dryer and think you should just suck it up and wait. Big deal. And next time your drying your hands give yourself all the time you need. Stop being so self-conscious about the people behind you....

I would rather have to wait for people to finish and have dry hands than exit the toilets by having to open the door that has a wet door handle.
