Block changing gears

    Hi

I'm learning to drive and have a question specifically with regards block changing from 4th to 2nd.

I feel comfortable with changing from 4th to 2nd but what i notice is going from say 40kph to about 20kph the car is going very slow to get to the speed for 2nd so i seem to be slowing down too early or getting too close to a junction and coasting.

Say coming up to a roundabout, how far away from it should you be before you start to brake and change down to second?

Also is block changing from 4th to 2nd something you could do coming up to most junctions or roundabouts or would changing down to 3rd be more appropriate at certain junctions as going from 4th to 2nd means you have to brake quite early.

The time at which you start braking wont be different no matter what way you change gears. If you are slowing down too soon, then you will need to brake a little later. But you may want to talk to your instructor about this issue.

My advice would be; if coming to a complete stop at a STOP sign or a set of lights that most likely will not change soon. Just stop in 4th gear. There is no need to change down at all.

Think of it this way - the gear you're in depends on your speed. So when you're coming up to a roundabout start slowing down to a safe, comfortable speed and adjust the gear you're using to that. There's no need to think "it's a roundabout so i need to be in second".

E.g. you're going down a mainroad at 50km/h in 4th gear and you want to take a left junction ahead. You can slow down in 4th, then block change down to 2nd if the speed matches the gear.
