Just wondered what is it like buying online and any recommendations of places to use?
I was looking for some sunglasses prescription.
Is it mainly the saving that buying online is good for?

I buy my glasses from zennioptical every year. Just go into specsavers, get my eyes tested, get the prescription and away I go.
I get the ultra thin lenses and it's considerably cheaper and glasses are fine, never had a problem.
Just don't forget when you are getting your eyes tested, to ask what your PD measurement is as they don't normally include it on the prescription and you need it.

What sort of saving do you make?

Ive got a pair of prescription glasses, branded frames, transitions and anti glare coating from vision express (where I get tested) and they were in the region of 350-400 euro (transitions are pricey), oh and had to wait about 10 days to get them.

Last month I ordered a pair from zenni optical, zenni frames, transitions, anti glare coating, same prescription as above and the total including postage was about 50 euro. Took about 2 weeks to get to me.

Theres just no comparison. My favourite "fancy" glasses are a pair from zenni that cost 20 euro.

I was quoted €380 in Optical Express but paid $110 in Zennioptical on my last pair a year ago.
The frames might not be designer but it's then lens that's important. I get ultra thin lens with all the extras for that price.
Delivery took about 3 weeks from date of order.

Ordered some prescription sun glasses today, I'm excited. I usually go for cheapest options when I buy glasses in a shop, I've gone for bells and whistles and still only 40 dollars. Hope they don't look like a pigs arse on me.
Thanks for advice everyone, went with Zenni, see how long it takes for them to arrive now.

I've bought frames from smartbuyglasses.com and has lenses cut and fitted locally. That worked well. Initially I was concerned that the website was too good to be true, but everything was fine.

Nope, were quite happy to do so. If you're in Dublin I went to the place downstairs on Kildare St opposite the Dept. of Agriculture.

How much did they charge to reglaze?

I priced it in Vision Express and it was a silly price, it would have been cheaper to but a whole new pair of glasses off them. They also made a big ordeal about how they couldnt guarantee anything as the frames may not be a standard size etc (the frames were bought there 2 years previous!)

I did find a guy online in Meath I think, who would reglaze for 40 euro plus p&p, but never got round to posting them to him. That was a basic reglaze, no transitions, just the prescription and antiglare IIRC.

I got new frames and lenses with tint and anti glaze and mirror finish for 40 dollars, posted and all. But I suppose if you liked frames you have might be worth getting re done. I suppose with the likes of vision express, that is not their business model, I'm sure others would do it for you.

Yes I use Zenni all the time now, have about 8 pairs from there!

But I also have a really gorgeous pair of old frames that Id like to have reglazed if there was a good deal somewhere.

Do any of these companies supply Photochromic lenses

look on the site Polo Zenni one, they seem to do a lot, you can go through process and see what it would all cost and if they can do what you want, and if you don't want to go through with it just don't give card details.

Yes I got photochromics last time from Zenni. They have Transitions and photochromic. Transitions are just a brand name, so I went for just photochromic as they were cheaper and they're great.

Although I also got a pair with permanent tints as the photochromic are no use for driving cos the car glass blocks the UV so they don't change.

Sorry for taking my time to post back. I had the exact same experience of really excessive quotes from Vision Express. I think the guys on Kildare St did it for about €60, which I was happy with. I was just getting single vision with nothing fancy.

Thanks a mill, 60 quid is a good price for it if the location was handy for you alright.
