What's the best type to go for? Any recommendations appreciated.

    For inlet or outlet?

Whichever is best for preventing theft of oil?

It is almost impossible to stop. But a start would be to put a lock on the lid. Then you could get one for the outlet. Outlet one is more expensive as you will need a box type housing and lock. Ask in some hardware shops.
Bring a photo of tank lid and outlet valve area.

A friend had his oil robbed one time and when he asked the gardai about a lock they told him not to bother as all they'll do is drill the tank and then you're missing your oil and need to replace the tank.

Plumber told me the same thing. I was tempted to bury it :)

Never bury a standard tank, it hasn't the strength to withstand the soil pressure and requires integral bunding

Underground tanks are available, it is quiet expensive but can be done, but must be done properly, remember 1litre of oil spill in the soil can impregnate up to 2 acres of land, and if your leak reached the water table you would contaminate a huge area and local water supplies (for an indefinite time)
