Got Cat5e from Tv trade and used the following connections on the end(as didnt want to chance putting the proper heads on)

    http://www.freetv.ie/toolless-rj45-connector.html

We get about 80 and the tech that put in the broadband sad he got 190(on a technicolor, which broke and I am on a Ubee router now)

I told Tv trade via email we had UPC 250 and what id need and he told me what to order.

We have a UPC tech calling out tomorrow to check and don't want to pay €20 to be told something my end
Ive checked all my end, but I am wondering is the connections only using 4(orange/orangewhite/green/green white)not all 8 cables effecting my speeds?

    Thanks for any help

Is your computer's Ethernet adaptor Gigabit (1000Mb/sec) or Fast Ethernet (100Mb/sec)?

So the connections he recommended will only get me 100?

The wires are all there anyways, and the heads come with 8 pins, so if you've only got 4 connected thats just lazy crimping.

Get a crimp tool and regular heads, forget that toolless junk, because its just that, junk.

I don't fancy paying €13 for a tool id use for five minutes and throw it in a press never to be used again

I asked TV trade and this it what was recommended, even asked them to put the heads on themselves to no joy

Becuase the router is in the hall, so out the wall, along a one floor shed, into my room and then into my brothers room.

There is no other way, about the router is the bathroom and tile floor, beside it is a door frame

    don't crimp on plugs then

    - if the cable gets a tiny cut (outdoors ) then rain/water will travel an amazing distance ( even upwards )

otherwise the water can travel into you PC and destroy the motherboard

seen it happen more than once

I think I would have paid €160 to have the job done properly.

Three times the price I can do it for, you're OK.

Plus wouldn't be any issues if TV trade gave me the right answer and parts.

I'm sure if i had no choice I'd have gotten a few heads and the tool and done it eventually

You have no choice. Listen to the advice given (on this board), Get the tool, get the heads, use all 8 wires. Simples.

    That's what I'm doing thx

Going to a local place to chance my arm to get them on, if not I'll buy the tool

Even tried a sparks on the road and he doesn't use them in work and lost the one he had

Not sure I would do that Jeff if you are taking the wire outside, I suppose it depends on the set up. With the cables pre-terminated, you need larger exit and entry holes, data plugs may get damaged pulling them through, cable may be too short, too long. Then again, it could be very straightforward in your set up.

There was a whole other thread discussing this, the cable is or has been ran unterminated out of and into the house.

It's my understanding it has now been done and the OP was given incorrect plugs/advice from TV trade, or in the interest of fairness as they are not here to defend themselves, the OP didn't explain what he wanted adequately.

As I and others said in the original thread, terminating and dealing with cat cable is not rocket science but there is a correct way of doing it. It's very easy to get wrong and you may not notice it's wrong for a long time.

The original price of €160 that the OP got to do the job from a spark was justified.

I remember the thread now, quite recent. I have a dormer bungalow with accessible crawlspace on both sides and a box of cat 5 or is it cat 6 in the garage so I do my own cabling but I would consider 160 as reasonable.

TV trade/Brian was asked what do I need to get for 250 UPC broadband and that I want full speed and was even thinking of cat6. He came back with the connectors that would never have given me the speed I so wished.
IF he said about the speed id get, id have said ok and tried a local place to see what could be done.

Found a local network place and he put the four ends on for me and tested the cable, didn’t charge but I have him the standard get yourself a pint.

Just waiting for the weather to improve and ill rent the drill from JW hire and wrap the connectors in bubble wrap or cardboard and drill a hole for both cables to go through. I got the faceplate things off tv trade so that will cover that hole easily

In the end if I say worse case, it will cost about €70 compared to €140-200

And this is why you pay professionals to do a job if you don't know how to do it yourself or aren't willing to learn how to do it properly and take advice.

You probably have already wasted €160 worth of your time talking about this, investigating this and going back and forward from TV Trade.

Now if you are the type of person who enjoys doing DIY work, troubling shooting things and learning new things (like I am), then "wasting" your time in this way is fine, as it is more like a hobby. But with respect, from your posts, I'm not sure you are this sort of person and I think you would have been much better off spending the €160 on a professional who has already spent their time figuring all this out and you would have ended up with a better, more professional setup (cable crimped properly into a ethernet faceplate and hole through wall probably proper water proofed and insulated), all with far less stress and hassle on your part.

In TV Trades defence, they are TV aerial/satellite installers, not network engineers. The same goes for electricians. While they all may have some experience in installing some minor networks, they really aren't experts in it and it really isn't unusual they see even these professionals get it wrong.

You can get proper network engineers and installers, but they usually cost way more then this as they usually work for big companies, doing big network installs, etc.

Running home networks is still a pretty new and rare thing for most TV installers and electricians.

BK I would write up a long reply, but it’s pointless as it will go round and round.

I used the cable, got the speeds I wished for, ill rent a drill tomorrow and run the cables and then live happily ever after(please god)

Thanks to those who helped and hopefully others will learn from my thread/s!!
