Vulture Funds

What is the general consensus on private equity funds (or vulture funds as the media like to call them)?

Personally I see them as opportunists and if the banks are selling cheap then somebody is going to buy it, just like anybody would seek bargains in everyday life.

Maybe not a legal matter although increased regulations have been proposed and I know anyone who's mortgage or loan has come under control of one of these businesses don't particularly like them. More of an ethical issue? What do people think?
