Best film never nominated for any Oscars?

What do people think is the best film to never be nominated for any Oscars whatsoever?

Mine is Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America (which deserved a Best Score for Ennio Morricone's music, at the very least).

    What are others' thoughts?

From recent years, I'd put Blue is the Warmest Colour. It definitely deserved a Best Foreign Language Film nomination.

A vast majority of great films that have had the fatal handicap of not being in the English language. I'd list them, but we'd be here a while.

Wasn't it a clerical error that prevented Morricone from being nominated (and surely winning)?

I'll give you Night Of The Hunter

I agree. I always complain that films outside the English language are the most overlooked at the Oscars.

What about in the English language?

None of these were nominated at all. The documentaries should have made the cut (Grey Gardens in particular is regarded as a classic of the genre), Let the Right One In and The Son's Room should have been shortlisted for Foreign Language Feature, and you could argue the respective cases with the others too.

The Big Lebowski (original screenplay, at least)
    Blackfish
The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (score, costume, production design)
    Grey Gardens
    Groundhog Day (original screenplay)
    Let the Right One In
Once Upon a Time in the West (score, production design, possibly Fonda or Robards for their performances too)
Picnic at Hanging Rock (cinematography, production design)
    Reservoir Dogs (original screenplay)
    Senna
    The Shining (cinematography, production design)
    The Son's Room
Zodiac (cinematography, editing, production design, adapted screenplay, director)

2025 Gigs and Events: Stuart Murdoch, Lyle Lovett, The Corrs/Imelda May/Natalie Imbruglia, Olivia Rodrigo, Iron Maiden, Dua Lipa, Lana Del Rey, Weezer, Billie Eilish (x2), Oasis, Sharon Van Etten, The Human League, Deacon Blue

The Big Lebowski (original screenplay, at least)

Blood Simple, Raising Arizona and Miller's Crossing as well were deserving of Oscars imo.

Others I think were deserving of Oscar recognition:
    King of Comedy
    Drugstore Cowboy
    Clockers
    Heat
    Rushmore

    Docutmentaires:
    Blackfish
    West of Memphis
    Dear Zachary

A really notable omission in this year's Oscars was The Lego Movie. I thought it was very strange that it didn't get a nomination.

Yeah, but I hear Emmet was really difficult to work with and rubbed a lot of powerful people up the wrong way. Such is the perils of being a super-diva!

Also, I think the Everything is Awesome song got a nomination.

Ah yeah, I forgot about that… that song's stuck in my head now for the day.

    .

Interesting question...because I had to check, so I learned something new today. Thank you. Some notables IMO...
69 Once Upon a Time in The West ..zero noms there
80 The Shining ...zero noms (that's a standout for me)
In 83 'The King of Comedy' and 'Scarface' both got zero noms
..and finally like c'mon....95 Heat, yep zero noms!

    "Rabbit Proof Fence" :-(

So "Night of the Hunter" never got a Nom? I am shocked beyond belief; That's a superb classic.

Take a list of Palme D'Or winners, Sundance Grand Jury winners and films preserved in the National Registry that didn't receive any nominations and you'd have a strong basic list to work from. Build out your list with the great non English language movies and then sprinkle in popular English language favourites that were overlooked for whatever reason.

You'd have a long list and a practically impossible job reaching any sort of consensus.

No Jim Jarmusch movie has ever been nominated for an Oscar.

That doesn't surprise me.....but it's still really not right.

Dead Man and Stranger than Paradise are masterpieces, to name just two.

I see your Dead Man and Stranger Than Paradise and raise you Ghost Dog and Down by Law. ;)

But yeah, pretty underrated director by both the academy and the general public.
