Carvoeiro is a small town, not overly touristy, lots of restaurants, not too far from Faro. Avoid Albufeira.

have a look at monte gordo, its the other side of faro and not far from spain. They get spanish and portugese holidaymakers and no louts. Has some lovely bars restaurants and the beach is absolutely fab. Would really suit a relaxing family holiday.

Agree with the Eastern Algarve suggestions. We stayed in Tavira and loved it. Nice restaurants and not very touristy. Mostly Spanish and Portuguese tourists with a few British.

Vilamoura is lovely but can be very crowded and expensive in high season.

Tavira is a lovely old town but it a bit of a trek to get to the beach. You take a small train to get out to it. Albufeira is loud with a very lively strip. Lagos is a bit of a trip from the airport but is my favourite spot. It has a relaxed feel to the place and the two beaches are lovely. Loads of restaurants and bars but without the craziness that you'd find in albufeira. http://www.fiesa.org is worth a visit and maybe http://www.zoomarine.pt/en/
