    Hi folks,
I'm vegetarian, and as a result I don't buy leather wallets,(or any material that comes from animals). All my wallets last maybe 6 months, and it's really
    starting to annoy me now.
Does anyone know of a sophisticated wallet that looks good and will last.
    Thanks

    Wallet made from cork:
Claims to be durable. I find that difficult to believe.

Or you could buy a faux leather wallet.

Try going on amazon UK and searching for a vegan wallet.

There are canvas wallets out there also but I haven't seen any that look sophisticated, as you specified.

This can't be for real, is it?

I can't get my head around the whole "velcro wallets are only for kids" mindset at all. I've always used a velcro wallet and never really thought anything of it. I'm just not a fan of leather ones (nothing to do with ethics, just aesthetic reasons). Velcro wallets just seem more secure to me anyway.

I need to get a new wallet because the zip finally broke in mine and am struggling to find one I like anywhere.

Are any cows bred specifically for their leather or does it tend to be a by product of the slaughtering process? If the latter then avoiding leather goods for ethical reasons would seem somewhat pointless as you wouldn't be saving any additional animals.

never understand why people who are vegetarians claim to be doing some wonderful act of kindness what do you vegetarians think would happen to all cattle if people stopped eating meat ..i wil tell you they would be killed if there was mo market for them thats what a dose of truth right there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,807 ✭✭✭Custardpi

Yes, "ethical" behaviour can sometimes have unintended consequences. For instance veal has become an unfashionable meat due to concerns about "cruelty". However, people forget that millions of male calves are born every year to dairy herds. Obviously they can't produce milk & as there's no outlet for their meat they are simply slaughtered (as they would have been anyway) & their meat for the most part goes to waste. Utterly pointless. I'd also wonder if vegetarians/vegans have properly thought about the impact their product choices of soya beans, synthetic (petroleum based?) shoes etc have on the environment during their production & whether as a result the vegan/vegetarian lifestyle is that much holier than thou than that of an omnivore.

I never claimed to be doing a wonderful act, I don't go on to people about my opinions of eating meat, each to their own. And if there was no market for them, they would stop breeding all the animals they use for meat.

And what about all the animals who are alive today they would be all killed in the morning if there was no market for cattle

Yes, it's one that's made of leather.

Take you place at the top of the food chain and don't be ashamed of using animals to better your life.

If your ancestors had been as squeamish as you, we never would have evolved to the stage of agonising over our wallet choices.

Come on - you seriously believed that?

Fred Perry’s Scotch Grain Billfold wallets

    http://www.fredperry.com/accessories/mens/wallets/scotch-grain-billfold-wallet-l6239.html
It's 35 sterling and was on the PETA website. Pricey I know. 100% PVC. I don't know if environmentalism is important in this choice to you.

This one has a cool stripe. PVC too.

I think the others on the page are leather though.

OP didn't ask for his choices to be scrutinised!

Or for people to start backseat-modding the thread.

    Yet both things happened.

    Go figure.

Not backseat nodding. Just sympathy for OP. I would say its really annoying to be grilled everytime you mention that you are vegetarian.

Ok guys, back on point please.

Well, as long as it's between a tomato and a mushroom...

I did a quick google and found this op if its any help to you. Its from the PETA website so I assume they are all 100% vegan and vegetarian. http://www.peta.org/living/for-men/mens-guide-vegan-wallets/

I have a Corkor wallet, no issue with it wearing out and looks fine. Also might be good if comments like some of those above get on your nerves :pac: You'll spend half your time having to prove to people that it's faux leather anyway :p

Although I don't think mine gets as much use as yours, what ones are you wearing out in 6 months? Also there's a Vegetarian forum on boards OP where this has probably popped a few times over the years, usually has fewer half baked 'doses of the truth' too.

To clarify, this isn't true. It would be foolhardy for any farmer to kill any calf just because of their sex. Calves can be fattened for the beef trade and as two years plus end up as juicy steaks on our grills and plates.

You can get different ones from the girl depending on your needs, different amount of card holders, plastic inner ID holder etc. She has 100s of 5 star reviews and the service I got was great. Wallet feels nice and get complimented on it a lot.

These guys ones would last a long time, it's made from vegetan micro, same stuff their vegan doc martens are made from
