All depends on when your spare time is. Commute a lot? 3ds all the way. Prefer couch gaming sessions with friends? WiiU all the way.
I'm more of a couch gamer as I drive to work and I've a nice big screen to play it on.

What kind of games do you like? Adventure? Beat'em'up? Driving?

Adventure I guess, fighting and driving games arent my cup of tea, I drive to work so I would be a couch gamer. Im leaning towards the wii u simply because I dont know much about the 3DS.

Yoshi's Wooly World and Zelda are two I'm looking forward to (Zelda probably not out until closer to the end of the year I imagine).

Both are fabulous machines with a bunch of amazing games that cater for most tastes, you won't be disappointed either way.

Splatoon looks like loads of fun, and if Nintendo gets the sharing mechanisms right for Mario Maker that could literally be endless fun.

I would probably get a WiiU tbh.
You can pick up a preowned 3DS for not much money and steadily put together a great ga es collection.
A WiiU though, even with its smaller games library still has more innovation and next gen visuals than the XB1 and PS4 combined.
Buy the home console, Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3 and Zelda Windwaker HD and kiss your afternoons, mornings and evenings goodbye!

Brilliant :D What are some of the 3rd party games like Assassins Creed and Mass Effect 3 like on it?

Do you have a basis for comparison? I don't, and I thought AC3 looked and played great. Every problem I had with the game was related to how much of it's interminable plot and repetitive gameplay it forced you to endure before reaching the end. If you don't feel compelled to finish it though, it's great fun at times (namely, when you're not shackled to it's ridiculous story and bizarre present-day new messiah interludes.) Few game experiences can compare to horse-back Bear hunting (to avoid disappointment, the bear is no on horseback, you are). You can get AC3 and AC:BF for between 5-10 euro if you hunt around, and either is worth it though I hear BF has far more fun and minimal Sci-Fi-Channel-esque hijinks. When Bayonetta 2 is done I'm going to get my pirate on.

Sadly, if it's mainstream 3rd party mega hits you are after the WiiU is not really the right fit.
In this regard the PS4 really has the upper hand.
Yes, there is a decent collection of titles out there for the WiiU but they are aging now and there are no more coming from either EA, Activision or Ubisoft.
If these are the games that excite you then you might be best buying a 3DS and a PS4 :(
Bloodborne, Arkham Knight and the new CoD and Battlefield titles are simply not coming to the WiiU.
That said, with the price of the WiiU never cheaper, here is lot to be said in owning all of the above, a 3DS, WiiU and a PS4, pretty much everything worth playing will be available to you, with the exception of Halo and the new Elite, although in the latter case you can play it on PC or simply get No Mans Sky instead!

I have a 360 atm and will prob get a Xbox one as well, just thought some games might be a little bit fun with the 2nd screen being used for a new feature not on the other consoles.

Can't comment on the 2nd screen, I use it for Off-TV Play. But That's a feature the other systems don't have I guess.

We often play Hyrule Warriors co-op split over the two screens, so one playing off the TV, one off the Gamepad.

Oh and by the way, you can play two player this way in the two call of duty games on it too. Mario Kart, 3d Mario, Lego Marvel and others all have that feature....which is pretty sweet if you ask me..

Yeah, play Mario kart that way too, didn't realise it worked that way with 3D World too, does it?
