Creating a feature wall in the living room

Was thinking of wallpapering the chimney breast in the living room and painting the walls at either side the same colour as the rest of the room. But the opposite could also be done....ie paint the chimney breast and wallpaper to the sides. Is it just a matter of choice or is one option better?

Yes you could paint the chimney breast a darker colour than the wallpaper and yes, it is just a matter of choice.

Thanks. In terms of creating the illusion of space, as its a small room, should the chimney breast paint or wallpaper be a lighter colour than the walls to either side?

As a rule paler cooler colours receed while strong, warm colours come forward so to make the room appear bigger use paler cooler colours on the larger section of wall.

Plus the 'busier' the pattern on the wallpaper the closer the wall will appear to you. Maybe get a few samples and see what works best.

If you want the room to seem bigger i'd make the chimney breast a feature and paint alcoves to match rest of the room.
