We'll be 10 years behind the Germans in getting supports for this fantastic technology but better late than never. We have higher solar irradiance than most of Germany by the way!
The Department of Energy and Communications is beginning the process of developing a new electricity support scheme to be available from 2016 onwards

Looking at the Eirgrid website it's clear that we as a country could save a lot of money by bringing in solar panels. Market price. There are spikes everyday which would reduce and possibly be eliminated by having solar during the day when demand and the price is highest.

Six billion. That's how much we spend on importing oil & gas and their products. I for one look forward to keeping that money in this country!

That's interesting, but I think it would be a shame if we started rolling out solar parks across agricultural land before we have used up roof space, particularly on industrial buildings where electricity is being consumed. If there is to be support for solar, then we should learn from the experience of other EU countries and make the support inversely proportional to the size of the system.

And we could learn from the UK where the support is for production. We only need to be paid for power exported back to the grid.

All that given, solar energy complements wind and Ireland can usefully focus on mixing the two. The obstacle to that seems to be redundancy of CCGT gas turbines which need to be paid for.

    More kit to be stolen.
The theft of PV kit in Germany from agri buildings is such that insurance for theft is no longer available.
In addition anything that threatens the unions in the ESB will be blocked so its just a pipe dream to satisfy some line in the troika programme.

If u doubt it, just wonder why we are the only country in the world with one set of entry doors on urban buses.
