    Hi all,
First time poster looking for abit of advice.i have a 08 jetta 1.9tdi and the engine has gone at 120,000. I replaced the engine from a jetta same year and similar mileage. I am now looking to trade the car and I am wondering how this would affect trade in value?

Well if the engine was replaced I suppose the new engine code wont match with the book or logbook. I don't know if I'd say anything at all about it unless they ask you. It's not as if the garage will tell prospective buyers about it.

Out of curiosity was it conrod failure that caused the old engine to fail at 120k km or miles ?

It's not the first one to happen on the bxe some pain. I have a golf with that engine 80k miles on it tbh Id be sick if it happened mine.

Maybe it's not the right thing to do but if you want to get the best trade in value dont mention it. As most garages will get cold feet if you start mentioning engine changes and it will be an excuse for them to give you less.

Have heard since that it's common enough with the bxe. A local mechanic suggested that it stems from problem with the shell bearings and if they are done there should be no problems.
One dealer offered me €3000 with no engine and tow car onto forecourt and then €4000 to drive in as is!

It should be worth 6.5-8k on a trade in well I suppose it depends what you are trading it against and whether it's a vw garage or not.

That was in vw garage. Trading against new jetta. Bit surprised that they gave such low value. New engine has passed nct.

Seems mad selling the car after just spending money putting a new engine into it. Is there something else wrong with it? Maybe that is what the dealers are thinking.

    Longford based!
Car is going fine but I just don't have the same faith in it with all I have heard about bxe engines

4k is plain insultingly low provided the car isn't wrecked. You need to shop around there are a few dealer within a reasonable distance of longford. If you can't get a decent offer sell it privately and then buy straight and you will get 2 or 3k of the new price of the jetta by not having a trade in.
