    Hello,

I need some advice on a shirt and tie that would be suitable for clinical exams and orals. I have an osce type exam coming up at the end of April and have been told to wear a shirt and tie but not a suit. I will be having these oral exams every year for the next 5 years I think and will also need the shirt for presentations, so I feel that I would like to get one or two good shirts that would last.

All the shirts I have are too casual for this ! Any advice on brands or where to go to get these type of clothes . I feel it is important to look young as well.

    Thanks in advance :)

The horror! The horror! There does not exist a world in which this is ever acceptable (at least, where there's no jacket). But it seems your hand has been forced.

I would go for a slim fit, light blue shirt with a plain or rep stripe navy tie. If you go for a slim fit it might off set the brutality of not being allowed wear a suit.

So hang on, are you going to be wearing trousers, or do they expect you to wear jeans? If it's jeans, you'll need to get a button down shirt, and pair with a slim knitted tie. This is how you can make a shirt / tie look casual without a suit.

Try TM Lewin for the shirt. You can probably get the tie there as well, if you don't want anything fancy.

Wear a suit, shirt and tie, but once in the interview or whatever, remove the jacket. Simple.

Wear a shirt, tie and trousers. Roll up the sleeves of your shirt and tuck your tie into your shirt when doing a clinical examination. A slim fitting shirt may be a little uncomfortable for clinical examinations, I don't know I am not a guy. But be sure to wear a shirt that you are comfortable and can move freely in. You may have to wear a white coat depending on where you are doing the exam so have it pressed and bring it with you. Do not wear a suit jacket - for infection control. Don't forget to wash your hands outside the stations with alcohol hand gel. Good luck!

I wouldn't overthink this too much. You just need a professional appearance and after that fashion isn't that important. If you don't have time to iron, make sure you get an easy care fabric. Make sure your tie is a good length so it can be tucked in if necessary. Some examiners will not want to see your tie swinging around. Good luck in your osce.
