Hi was looking at buying a may 2014 BMW 520d m sport saloon, manual(I know wife doesn't want automatic), 6500miles on clock from BMW garage in UK. Asking 25990 for it. Got him down to 25000. Wouldn't go any lower. Good price or not?

Is that sterling or euro? What price is the car new? I would expect about 15-20% off the new price.

There's a guy on another thread here getting rid of his 13 BMW 5 series manual. Would you consider buying private ?

Just had a quick look at the thread but nearly sure its a 13

You are lucky to get that from a UK dealer.
UK dealers and the car network in general in the UK is well ran with asking prices very very close to the sale prices.

Vrt and all in on today's ex rate just under 42k. Getting it in an trim as well so saves me additional costs of flights and ferries

Funny one the vrt calculator. When I click on versions of car there are two options for 'f10 520d'. One works out at 7200 and the other at 7600. Can't tell the difference. Any ideas why that would be

Wouldn't the exchange rate be too bad right now to even consider UK?

Cheapest I could find for under 10k miles was 46500 so for 42000 I'm not doing too bad

Was that auto or manual. It's just that I think the resale of the manual will be less than the auto.
But overall it looks like a good deal.

Was thinking that myself but we might hold onto the car for a good few years. Was looking at BMW extended warranty at the end of the 3 years. Might be a viable option

Lad you might want to have a read of this recent thread before you go buy a manual 5 Series:

You will find it very difficult to get decent money for it come selling on time. I would suggest you and your wife test drive an auto first.

Bazz 26 got in ahead of me.
I would agree entirely with his post.
Think twice before going down the manual route. It might be penny wise pound foolish plus the auto car is much nicer to drive. It's even quicker and more economical in day to day use.

Thanks for the advice. I think it is n47 engine. Should I be worried about the timing chain issue or was it resolved?

The issue was resolved by then I believe.

You'd be crazy to get a manual. Auto all the way for those cars.

The issue was never fully resolved. My advise is that if you are buying one of these cars make sure and get one with the BMW dealer approved 2 year warranty. Yes you will pay more for the car but it's 2 years peace of mind. When something does go wrong with these cars it tends to be expensive.

There will still be 2 years on the warranty from may 2015 so hopefully this should cover it. From doing research it appears it is due to BMW advising servicing every 20,000 miles. If I purchase it I'll be changing the oil every 8000 miles. Small cost for piece of mind

I read all comment on that thread and although implied by some folks giving advise, there doesn't seem to be any hard evidence that the low trade in price the op was getting is down to his car being an auto- it seems to be down to dealers looking to make serious profit from the sale. I know many people that won't drive any auto's and traditionally manual BMW's have been very popular.

I've had manual BMWs and bought an F10 auto 5 months ago and spent a good bit of time researching and going around looking at them. The majority of 5 Series sold are autos and the majority of used ones on forecourts were autos too. A fair share of manual 5 Series I seen on carzone 5 months ago are still there now. While smaller BMWs are still popular in manual, the 5 Series and that segment of car is dominated by autos.
