Stillborn problems

Not on a great run this year with mortality running at this stage 19%.one calf died at 2 days with what I suspect was an undeveloped digestive system but the rest aare a combination of stillborn full terms or premature but within a month of a calving with one maybe 6 weeks. Was slow reacting as I had put down some to missing the actual birth despite I would have considered myself having good observation-birth losses normally run very low with me maybe 1 in 40.i just thought I was on a bad run and in cluded a set of twins and 2 breech births.now I can see that see these cows are calving quickly and other cows I had hepled but lost were quick as well.we sent the last one to the lab yesterday(month premature)and from discussions with the vets they seem to be suggesting calves were dying due to the placenta comi ng away prematurely during the calving process which ties in with the one i had tonight as the placenta came with her.we will try and run some tests on it but as its saturday i dont think we will get it to the lab but in the mean time have ye experienced anything like it and what ws the cause.after furious googling the past few nights I know there are multiple causes but ii just like to hear yere experience, pm if you are more comfortable with that

what minerals are they on? Do you vaccinate for lepto, do you use iodine pre calving? Hopefully you will get a solution soon

I had a bad run myself but more fertility problems. 8 of 25 cows didnt go in calf plus 1 heffer aborted. So I got them blood tested for lepto, neospora, salmonella and ibr. Waiting on results to come back. Id recommend getting them blood tested if your calf results come back negative. You can test for disease and mineral deficiencies.

Have to admit I was a little lax with minerals this year but since I sorted the cows in jan the ones in the near calving house are adlib in other words just fire a bag into a blue half barrel. I had 5 abortions the year of the schmalin berg but outside of that I havent had many besides your normal one or two a year.didfor lepto when there was a fews in our aera years ages ago.im at this game with 29 years so I was due a hit

I wouldn't feed minerals that way in a barrel, you're more likely to overfeed. Why not just sprinkle over the silage.
When I read you post first, I was thinking of Smallenberg Virus. Maybe the virus or a strain of it is still circulating in the herd.

my dad had one of those calves this year, the calf was stillborn, was full term but the placenta disconnected some how sometime. there was also a hole a few inches back from the navel area. we didnt take the calf to the lab unfortunately but the vet took blood tests from the cow and we are awaiting these results

Basing this on v little, but the obvious answer is minerals, 19% is v high. Should u consider bolusing, I know it's getting late, but getting these cows back incalf could be ur nxt problem, which would be a bigger issue. All sure boluses used here and v happy with them, not a single cleaning held incl twins

Possible but theres generally some deformity in some calf

If you can at all try get the calf, the placenta and a fresh blood sample from the cow to the lab together. The placenta especially makes a very big difference in diagnosis and the pathologist in the lab will be much happier seeing it come in with the calf. Blood sample from cow very useful for things like lepto and neospora and will often be compared to a blood sample a few weeks after the abortion to see if any change in antibody levels.

Hope you are through the worst of it!
