parents looking at both of these cars at the moment. a 2015 model.both will be the basic diesel versions with no extras except metallic paint.
whats the one to go for. mondeo looks nice and has nice interior. is the insignia a lot more powerful with the 140bhp 2.0 cdti engine rather than the 115bhp ford unit?

is there a new insignia due anytime soon?
    what is a stop/start system

I'd pick the mondeo even though I'm not a huge fan.

Iv a 14 reg Insignia, had a Qashqai before that, 10reg Mondeo before that. Exclude the Nissan as its not relevant but find the Insignia quite heavy on the juice. Would rather the new Mondeo looks better too imo and has more equipment as standard

Find the Stop Start really annoying

Insignia is now 6 years old whereas the Mondeo is newer. Is the 1.6 TDCi the only option to consider in the Mondeo? The 150bhp 2.0 litre is much better and the 1.6 TDCi is being replaced later this year by an all new 1.5 TDCi with 120bhp.

Stop/start system has been around for a good few years now. Basically the engine cuts out when the car is stopped in traffic and in neutral, it automatically starts again then when you press the clutch. It's supposed to save fuel bit in reality doesn't do much other than lowering emissions a little making it more attractive to buyers.

Bog spec mondeos aren't really bog spec anymore, they come with 17 alloys, chrome outside, quite difficult to tell the difference between that and the titanium. Now there is a bog spec one around with no chrome, nothing flashy and mean 16 rotten looking alloys. Ford's brochure has that specific spec down as the 1.0 one, but in my local Ford theres a line of about 15 unreg'd mondeos, about 13 of which look the same with the chrome and 17 alloys, and 2 of them poorly specc'd ones. I really need to get more comprehensive with my research in these, as in the mk4.

1.6 tdci is the only option alright. they wouldn't pay out the extra money as they would see it as a waste. the bog standard mondeo does seem to come with a nice few features alright. the insignia doesn't look too bad either but I suppose prices have gone up sure they are now both around the €29k mark for the standard diesel models so they would want to be including some few bits for that price. sure you could have got a new Renault fluence a few years ago in the scrappage for 15k. hard to see how the next model up is nearly double the price now.

stop start doesn't sound great to me. probably grand when they are new but in a few years when the battery would be getting old could catch you out in the middle of a street.

Manufacturers fitted uprated batteries and starter motors but from personal experience of having cars fitted with the system, it's more a PITA than useful. Glad my current car doesn't have it.

You can turn the system off you know.

I'm well aware of that but unless you are stuck in constant slow moving traffic all day long the savings are minute. And typically as soon as the engine cuts out the traffic tends to start moving again. It would not be a must have for me.

would you notice much of a difference between the 1.6tdci 115bhp vs the 2.0 cdti 140bhp?

Of course, the 2.0 litre has more grunt and torque. You would notice it for overtaking and motorway driving. The 2.0 litre would be less stressed too and probably just as economical.

You would want to be getting a good discount off the Insignia at this stage though as there must be a new model around the corner now. It was launched at the end of 2008 and got a facelift in late 2013.

The 2.0 CDTI insignia for 2015 has now 170bhp available. Brilliant acceleration and torque. It's also very quiet.
Just got one myself and it is a huge improvement.

They are launching the new 1.6 CDTi 138bhp from the Zafira and Astra in the Insignia soon too afaik.

Which model did you have before, wondering is it noticeably better than the old 163bhp?

I had the 163bhp. This is much more nippy, quieter and fuel efficient. The gear ratios are also closer to what you'd find on a petrol engine. A great improvement.
