My Girlfriend just got a letter today from Revenue.

    Dear Sir/Madam

I refer to your recent request to alter the details of the Financial Institution to which repayments/refunds are to be sent. Please note that future repayments/refunds will be sent to:

    IBAN

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Account is a permanent Tsb Account on Dorset Street.

She is due a large refund in the next couple of days and was horrified when she saw this.

Ive asked her what computers she used to log in to her account and when, in case it was her computer that was hacked, but she said she hasnt logged into her Paye online in 5 years. So if anything has been hacked its on the Paye's side.

Cant contact them till Monday but payment is due around now.

    Any thoughts.

Did your girlfriend use a tax agent at all to make a claim for a refund lately?

How is she getting a refund if she didnt go through PAYE anytime?
Did she speak to a revenue agent?
Did the revenue agent say they would send a cheque out?
Did the revenue agent ask her for an iban number?

Sounds like a scam email. I would be surprised if Revenue would send an email with anyones full bank details on it.
Maybe the scam is that you panic and reply to the email with your "correct" details on it.
Whatever you do don't reply to the email.

    Hi guys.

Yes she received a letter. She applied for a tax refund by posting a form to revenue med 1 form.

She received letter telling her how much her refund would be and next day she received above letter saying her account details had been changed and money would go into this unknown account.

    Very fishy.

    Thanks

She should phone them ASAP Monday to clarify.

On an aside, if she'd just used the PAYEanytime service, this wouldn't have happened.

If she didn't use a tax agent then she needs to contact Revenue as soon as possible to double check the bank details. Those letters about bank details are standard automated ones anytime anyone changes your the bank account details. The letter should say contact Revenue if the details are incorrect. It may be that the staff member who processed the claim input some other persons details in error.
