Replacement Exhaust

Exhaust on S-max has 2 substantial holes in pipe leading to back box. It only has one box with pipe leading all the way to cat at engine. The back box is not leaking yet but is a bit corroded so probably not much left in it.

Would I be better off going to Atlas/Fast-fit for a full replacement or go to the likes of Souhan's in Trim to replace the box and the part of the pipe that's damaged?

Any recommendations regarding exhaust brands or would it matter a damn in a 2l diesel?

A weld and patch may do for the next while.

Have a Indy mechanic have a look.

You should check an independent exhaust fitter. You may be surprised at the pricing. I got a back box for a Vectra recently for €70 fitted and all.

think they make them with very thin metal as we ended changing pipe and box when pipe into box snapped making the car pole vault dragging box behind,4 years on a diesel is short lol

The pipes on those Smax / Mondeos are prone to rusting and falling apart. Forget about a repair, price around and ask what brand exhaust they are fitting.

Already asked an Indy to have a look when he was replacing the starter motor last week but when I went ot pick it up he said he hadn't time to look at ot and bring it back again some other day. Unfortunately I had to take day off to get that sorted and don't fancy taking another one off to get exhaust examined.

Agree with the level of corrosion on the pipe and external lining of box I don't think it would be worthwhile to repair. I will price around a few exhaust centres for prices. While its a bit noisy on normal b roads its really the constant drone on longer journeys on motorways that it annoying and I suppose the possibility of fumes entering the car!

By the way any suggestions for a decent exhaust brand?

bosal or walker are common names in exhausts

I tried to ring around the fast fits/Advance Tyre places and basically I couldn't get a price unless I called in which is awkard as I would then need to make 2 journey's. One guy gave me a price of around €280 but said he would need to see before he could confirm. Its amazing that these places can't give a price on a new replacement exhaust because there are apparently so many exhausts types it has to be seem to be confirmed. Is this simply down to car manufacturers making it awkard or these places insisting you come in and maybe 'capturing' your business?

Anyone replace an exhaust on a 2l S-Max or Mark IV Mondeo recently and could give me a price?

    Thanks

it can be hard if there are a number of different systems on cars

Update on this. Finally got to call to a couple of tyre/exhaust centres. 2 branches of the same chain. The 1st told me that I needed a complete exhaust to the cat and the only brand of exhaust that can be fitted to s-max is a 'clarizol' (not sure of the spelling) costing €470. Blame Ford for this and because of this the likes of Bosal etc do not supply compatible exhausts.

2nd place said I needed a new complete exhaust and that Bosal was the only brand they supplied - €160 for back section and another €160 or so for middle section connected by clamps - €330 all in.

I have to say Im taken aback by the cost in general but also the different views of 2 branches of same chain.

I am going to make a couple of more calls but I'm afraid I will get the same response .. bring it in before we can give you a definite quote.

I tried the website but can only select exhaust parts (except for clamps) for petrol engines. I had a look on a couple of UK sites and the back box was priced at approx £65. A fair difference. Problem is I cant be sure if I have the right part and then I would need to get someone to fit. I really need to find out what is the correct part. My car is a UK import and I'm not even sure if it has a dpf or whether its a 136 or 140 hp model. Must try and get the UK reg and see if I can confirm the basics. Life is just too complicated!!

I had to put this job on the back burner as another priority surfaced. However, back looking again and I been quoted €180 fitted for a GT exhaust. As it a hell of a lot less expensive than the Bosal quote would it be any good? Anyone use this brand of exhaust?

    Thanks
