Just wanted to know what everyone is doing with the exchange rate been absolutely crap buying from the UK. I mainly use Amazon.co.uk but the rate is just getting to expensive to make it worth my while buying anything from the UK. Where is the next best place to order?

For example, recently I wanted to buy a set of spanners 60£ with shipping to the Motel it turned into 105€ ?

Anyone any suggestions for fellow bargain hunters?

We are getting slaughtered. Just buy in € wherever you can. Some of the continental amazon sites might give you better bang for your buck.

OP, try amazon.de, or .fr, or .es. You can use the same username & password as you have for .co.uk iirc.

Amazon Germany tends to have pretty good € prices I think.

Anybody find Amazon.de won't always ship to Ireland. I tried to buy a radio a couple of weeks ago and they wouldn't ship here, they would ship to UK though which was even more annoying. It wasn't a Marketplace seller either.

    Parcel motel can help there.

Yes, but that's not the point. If they ship to the UK, why wont they ship here? I could have bought the same radio on Amazon.es (which they actually advertise as being imported from Germany) and had it shipped here, but it was much dearer, plus I'd have to pay the PM fee.

lol why didn't I ask if there was such a site around, as I used to just keep searching each Amazon site one-by-one.

Pity it doesn't include shipping costs, but a good start.

    thanks

i've bought from .DE a few times and have found the shipping costs to Ireland to be more expensive than to UK so using parcel motel is slightly more cost effective.Plus you pay a lower VAT rate

I knew someone would post this. It's not a bargain alert at all. It's bargaining on the bargain alerts. Alot of bargains are killed off by the exchange rate with the pound at the moment. Ask others for there bargaining ways when shopping is a big bargain to alot of people who use Amazon.co.uk alot.

The thing is, it's not really £ so expensive, but € so cheap.
Our currency is weak at the moment comparing to anything else (GBP, USD, CHF, etc) so this reflectes higher prices of products in Euro as well, unless those products are manufactured in one of Eurozone countries.

Possibly best bargains to get at the moment are from Russia with such ridiculously cheap Ruble.

  • Am I doing something wrong? I'm not getting the option of free delivery on any of the other Amazon sites so it basically works out the same as buying from the UK site.

For example I tried to buy some Eneloop Pro batteries on Amazon.fr. My order was over €25 but there was no option for free delivery.....I just don't see any advantage over the UK site when you can't get the free delivery!

Greece is well factored in. UK economy is what is driving sterling.

Euro will recover, but it could be a long wait. The printing of money via quantitative easing is in effect devaluing the currency. Expect .70 rate before .80!

Ouch - consumer rate has fallen to .6960 with Bank of Ireland. I thought it would be another week for the .70 level to break.

Basically, multiply your sterling price by 1.45 to get to the price in Euro.

If you are in Dundalk / Letterkenny / Sligo / Monaghan - expect the Northern reg cars to take over the shopping centre carparks!

I know the products I am selling are now 20% cheaper here than UK and the number of UK orders has risen sharply in the last couple of weeks. :)

€/$ parity is expected to be reached in weeks its fallen to .95 as of this morning.
Analysts predict it could possibly fall below even 1:1.

I got something off amazon 3 weeks ago. £27.66

The rate offered by amazon was €38.89

BOI mastercard was 0.722 and €38.31

so still a little cheaper but nowhere near the difference there used to be. In other recent threads people had said amazon had gotten better on their euro rates.

None of the European sites offer free delivery to ROI or UK.So as you say no advantage gained specially on small purchases.

But i picked up a coffee machine from .DE last year for €230 including delivery which was at the time over £400 on .UK.

So always worth checking across all the sites when making a sizable purchase

Always check the other amazons, especially with the euro the way it is.

:D instant success from using this thread :D

I found the same 5.1 speaker system I've been after on the amazon.de site, but the seller didn't ship to Ireland.

managed to get an email address from their Amazon shop and contacted directly via email.

They said they would ship to me no problem, so item paid via Paypal and now item en-route to me, and I have saved close to €90 (25%) :)

    So moral of the story....

Use the links on this thread to search multiple Amazon sites and dont be disheartened if Amazon says they dont ship to Ireland - contact them directly.

    HAPPY OUT

Sorry I am a bit dim today...how does this work?

So Amazon more than likely will do free delivery once its in Germany, and this company will provide a delivery address, and then forward on the package to you in Ireland at a cheaper rate offered, correct?

Very good I would say if you wanted to consolidate a few packages

Thats pretty much how it works. If Amazon.de wont ship to Ireland, you could get it shipped to mailbox.de for free (potentially) and then pay them the cost to deliver it to Ireland. Handy if A) They wont ship directly to Ireland, or B) if they do ship, but it works out cheaper this way.

I do the same with parcel motel. I even got some stuff off amazon.es shipped to my UK parcel motel address for €4, and then another €4 to use parcel motel. Postage from amazon.es directly to Ireland was €9 or so.
