My dad has a 1.9 tdi passat 07

he told me it would go into gear for him so
i looked at it and would only go into gear when car not started

no flywheel noise when ticking over
i had suspected a solid flywheel kit was in car before we bought it as pedal was very hard

anyway it seamed like hydrolic issue as fork was moving in bay so changed slave cylinder , no better, then changed master cylinder, still no joy

any opinions before we pull box off?
couldnt be clutch / flywheel related could it

My son had something similar on a Golf he had a few years ago.
He left it in for a service and when he went to collect it it wouldn't go into gear, the clutch felt normal enough but it just wasn't doing anything.
We left it overnight with the mechanic and he replaced the clutch and it all worked perfect, he showed me the one he had removed and a small part of it (can't remember exactly which part) had broken away and was the cause of the problem....

Had a few like this before where the lining came off the clutch disc and got wedged in the pressure plate. Gave the same symptoms.
