Car hire

I'm currently hiring a car in Dublin and I'm looking to get another driver on it. But the cost is ridiculous. Is it possible to transfer my own car insurance (with named driver) onto the rental and let a 2nd person drive it? If it crashes it will be covered my own insurance not their excess anyways. Any ideas? (Current car is broken down btw)

You need to check with your insurer as different policies have different rules.

my car insurance are fine with it but the car hire company say you have to pay them for a 2nd driver.seems like a scam tbh

They own/lease the car. They make the rules. You follow them. Simples.

If I loan my car to a friend under condition that he is the only driver, I don't think I would be too happy if he let his wife drive it, just because it was under his insurance policy. I would be within my rights to report it stolen.

There's always a charge for an extra driver on any car hire contract I've ever taken out.

Not only would you need to check with your insurer, you'd also need to get the hire company to approve and they'd say no.

I've hired a car last year, and when I asked if my wife was also allowed to drive, he replied he doesn't care at all who drives the car. Can be anyone, but it will be my deposit lost if car is crashed.

A bit irresponsible of the rental rep imo. He must have handed in his notice by that stage.

I have rented cars in Spain lots of times. Usually it is only a fiver a day per extra driver. Last time it was free.

    I don't think so.
Same thing was in T&C of my rental.
No limitations on who drives the car or where it's driven.
All really they were interested is that it's returned on time and in the same condition as when picked up.
It was a small rental company in Poland - local place - not one of big franchise brands...

I've rented plenty of times, and this has never been the case... I wouldn't take your case as any kind of norm before reading the T&Cs very carefully.

I never said it was a norm.
I just replied to cml387 to prove that it's not always the case that you have to pay for extra driver like he suggested.

It's probably mostly dependant on country you are renting in...

Strange, I hired a car from Hertz in Warsaw and it was named driver only.

It was in the T&Cs and there was a charge for additional drivers.

I've never experienced a case of anyone could drive the car, not even in the Netherlands where the car is Insured and not the driver.

Small rental companies I'd read the Terms and Conditions very carefully.
They can say what ever they want verbally, but it can create a problem if you have an accident

Yes, but hertz is probably the biggest rental car provider in EU and they have all unified probably all over EU.

Same thing in Poland. Car is insured and anyone can drive it. That's why smaller rental companies don't really care who drives the car, as insurer will cover it anyway.

I did read terms and conditions carefully. It just said that person driving my hold a valid driving licence. That's how it works with most small rental companies in Poland I assume (not the big franchise ones like Hertz, Budget, Dollar, Avis, Thrifty, etc - they would charge for anything they can including extra drivers).

I certainly wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to accept a car off a rental place that had such a cavalier attitude as to say "I don't care who drives it or where".
Well why would he care? If I pay for rental and I paid deposit, then it's up to me to decide who drives, and I take the risk if car is crashed. That's actually logical, isn't it?
