I was passing Maplins in Jervis Street earlier today and noticed they have a deal on this 32Gb Nvidia Shield tablet which is an android 8" gaming focused tablet.

It will include the game controller and tablet cover as part of the price. They are also doing the 16 Gb with the controller for about €320.

It seemed a good deal based on them previously charging for the accessories separately at the same price. The UK price for the tablet alone comes in around €415 without transaction charges.

is the cover included with the 16gb for the 320?

From what I can remember on the sign in Maplins it was only the controller that came free with the 16Gb.

I can't remember what they were charging for the cover there. At a guess I think its €45 by itself.

There is a deal where you get the controller and the cover on Amazon as well right now btw. Also, same deal as Maplins for the 16 gb.

Looks to be a general deal btw. Excellent price for Maplins, will drop in later myself, and take a look. Been looking to get one of these for a while, and glad I waited :).

    **EDIT**
The Amazon deal includes some games. I assume the Maplins one probably does as well.

I was a bit shocked myself to find what seems to be a bargain in Maplins.

I didn't see any mention of additional games but if its a general offer then presumably Nvidia are putting a push on selling these. They announced their new console today as well I see.

It's a brilliant tablet - the best android available to my mind. The 16gb version with the controller for €320 is a great deal - you can buy covers on amazon for a tenner and there's a Micro SD slot for more space.

The 32Gb does have the 3g/LTE capability as well. Probably not much point to that though unless you really need it.

Seems to be a general offer:

I'm hoping they also do the kick a** set-top box in may for about 200 or less.

This seems a great deal, spec wise it's very close to the Nexus 9 which is €399 for the 16gb version, with the exception being 32-bit only and a hit in resolution (which tbh is fine as it'll presumably give better battery life). I can't imagine I'd use the gaming side of it a whole lot (I've an AMD gpu unfortunately) but it if it's included it could be fun for a while. Nearly stock Android too and already on 5.0.

Would folks recommend this as a powerful standalone tablet? Would there be much competition at this price?

Tab S 8.4 is around €350 in most places now. Superior screen and 3GB of RAM. Pretty damn powerful too.

The Shield does look quite thick alright and more RAM would keep the Tab nice and smooth for longer. One thing that puts me off Samsung and other manufacturer tablets though is the custom skins. I'm so used to "pure Android" now with my Nexus 4 and first gen Nexus 7 that I think I'd find it hard to go back (although obv that's all possible with custom roms), although I'd definitely consider all options.

I guess realistically the Samsung would probably be the way to go if the focus isn't on gaming, but I guess I have some research to do!

Games look and run great on the Tab S series. Never had any dropped frames or stutter etc.

TouchWiz is actually fine on the Tab S, don't notice any slowdowns or lag on mine. I use Nova Launcher anyway which works very well.

Cool, good to know, thanks. The Shield is probably better for "hardcore" gaming, with the controller and the PC streaming features, but tbh, in the long run, the sort of games I'd be playing mostly I think would either be casual or classic point n' click adventure games like Broken Sword etc. on a tablet so anything modern would probably do nicely. The beefy specs for me would really be for longevity sake i.e. it still runs smooth after a couple of years, which it sounds like the Tab has also.

Tab S 8.4 in White is only €319 in Argos right now. Cheapest price I've seen anywhere, it is €349/€359 everywhere else.

There's a promotion on Amazon.DE for them right now, but I didn't have time to read it.
I don't know if it's valid here, or even if it's any good, but on the off chance it is good, and it's only for a day or two......

Just tried to order it. They will not deliver to Ireland, or UK, or Parcel Motel.

There's a German equivalent to PM that gives you a German address and then they will charge you the cost of delivery plus their fee to send it to your address. Others have used it to buy OnePlus One phones.
