New Broadband & TV Package

    Hi,

Apologies if i am posting this in the wrong section, and i am sure it is a question that is asked a lot, however i also understand that new deals and new companies are popping up at a fast pace. I don't have much knowledge when it comes to Broadband and TVs so i would appreciate the help.

I've searched on the price comparison sites, but the info seems out of date.

I've moved to a new rented accommodation in Dublin, and i need to get Broadband and some form of a TV package.

In terms of broadband, reliability is much more important to me than speed, and i don't need any movie or sport channels.

    QUESTIONS:

01 - should i just get a reliable broadband connection, and purchase a 'streaming' box for the channels
02 - i've heard Sky are cheap at first, but hike their price after a few months
03 - do UPC have almost the same channels as Sky
04 - is it worth looking at any other company other than Sky, UPC and Eircom (i've suggested these three purely because they provide TV and UPC)

    Thank you.

    P

You could go Free to Air for TV if you are able to put up a dish (or there aleady is one) and a Saorview aerial.

Then all you need is broadband.

Thanks Sam, i don't think there is a dish or if we are allowed to put one up.

You may get a better response in another forum op.

For me sky has the advantage in tv. Their epg is second to none. You will get a new customer offer at the start and then it will increase. Make sure if you are going for this that your future bills are explained.

I'd recommend upc for bb. They currently have a package for €45 a month (€25 intoductary offer). It is unlimited bb, although it may have a fup. The speeds are up to 240mb. I don't think their tv is any good and there is lots of negative stuff wrote on boards about horizon tv.

You could also look at vodafone for bb.

If it is an apartment there may be a communal dish on the roof.

Sorry I know this is an old thread but resist the temptation to bundle.

For me UPC are the only show in town for broadband, Sky are the only show in town for pay TV, although they are easily supplanted by Netflix etc.

UPC's network was designed for super high speed data transfer and Sky's system for TV. Anyone else is fiddling round the edges IMHO.

Freeview/Netflix - yeah great but I just want the thing to work and record all my stuff. Frankly Basic Sky is cheaper except in the very long term with all the deals and free crap they give.
UPC/Eircom - varying degrees of crappy implementation of TV over IP. Don't carry all the channels Sky do. Eircom especially - No Sky Sports 3,4, or 5 IIRC. May as well throw up a freesat dish.

Anyone else for broadband - using Eircom or crappy wireless. Fibre on Eircom (Sky + Vodafone also = Eircom) seems to be available to 11 people in Dundrum and is plagued by the fact that if you're more than p!ssing distance from the cabinet 100Mbit becomes 40Mbit.

If you are stuck with Eircom Fibre as your only option the last thing you want is that awful, awful implementation of TV over IP sucking up the bandwidth.

If you can only get DSL then even streaming can be a PITA and evision isnt an option anyway.
