A new trade and upgrade scheme is advertised to be starting in garages this weekend the 7th and 8th March.

Making this thread for people's views on what it's all about. They aren't giving too much info out on their website, here it is http://www.hyundai.ie/trade-upgrade/index.html

So if I trade in a car. It means I have to buy a NEW Hyundai and when I do that I get 4000 euro off.

And probably a sh1t price for my trade in.

Is that how it works for a car that's not scrappage or useless etc.

Not only that, the finance on offer is a pcp scheme. People seem to have different views but I think it's well dodge.

You don't have to get finance though.

True , you could buy outright of course.

You sure you don't have to get finance? Could I get €4k for my 2000 Ford Focus on a new i20? Sounds like a great deal, what's the catch?

    what's the catch?

You'll have to drive a Hyundai for a few years.

What's so bad about that? I've been in a few and they seemed like perfectly competent cars in comparison with other brands. Lots of kit too. I suppose some people will always be thinking that they're cheap Korean crap but It seems to be completely unfounded.

Ah, it was only a joke. They're well put together and will do the job. 4k for a 15 year old Focus is hard to say no to. FYI, Nissan and Opel are doing similar scrappage schemes.

It seems that way, although I can't confirm. The trade in car needs to have an NCT etc.

How much does a new car depreciate the moment you drive it out of a garage ;)

this looks like decent offer. Is the I30 as spacious as the focus does anyone know? and is the only difference between the premium and deluxe a panoramic sunroof and 17in wheels, or would the interior finish be better as well?
I am looking at a load of work on my 03 skoda superb( 200,000 miles) headlights and loads of other wear and tear bits to be changed , could be about €1000 (waiting on a quote) and the timing belt is due too in the next year. that combined with the reduced tax (700 v 200), and the 4k scrappage seems like a really good time to change ! It seems to make sense , doesn't it?

Is the i30 part of the scrappage deal?

What's the cost to change then to a hyundai i30 on scrappage deal

Yep, €4k off, (amended my original post to say this)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,220 ✭✭✭boredatwork82

So called into the Hyundai dealer up here after work. It's up to 4000 Euro, and he said he would give me 3k for my car. That would leave me with €23995 + 600 metallic paint - 3000 for my car = € 21585 for the 1.6 premium version of the i30.

But the down side is the finance cost would pretty much wipe out any savings.

But I noticed on the way into the garage my nct expired today. He said he would have to check with Hyundai whether it affected the deal, but I told him if I spend any money on my car I will be keeping it.

This sounds like a crock of **** to me. They said 4k scrappage ...not UP to 4k. They may as well say up to 10 k discounting that's the case. Sure if you went in with no trade in you'd prob get nearly 2/2.5 k cash discount.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

See how much another Hyundai dealer will give you. BTW Opel are doing similar, the top scrappage allowance only applies to the Insignia rather than the entire range.

My guess is they were trying to beef up the trade price of the trade-in?

What do you mean? Forcing other dealers to offer more for old cars as trade ins?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    Not that, no.

Without going into massive detail, the way new and used cars are priced/valued/traded in is all smoke and mirrors.

People focus on what they're getting for their car vs the artificially inflated RRP.

Example, I buy a new civic for €26k and get €7k for my old one and pay €19k to change
In reality, I'm buying the new one for €24k and getting €5k for my old one, still paying €19k

Deals like €4k trade in bonus take away a lot of the haggling for zero value traðe ins, but offend punters with cars that are worth something as the garage can't massage the figures. The garage isn't buying the new car for €4k less than usual. Maybe €1500 less.

Ah ok, get ya. Did the rounds this morning anyway. Opel astra seemed to be the best deal, and the car I liked most. Now to think do I throw a few Bob at my own machine or take the pint.

The ceed was actually impressive enough but no scrappage against it.

The Astra is a bit long in the tooth now though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

There is a new Astra out later this year which probably explains the better deal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,220 ✭✭✭boredatwork82

Well got the quote to fix up my car, €1400. Also needs a timing belt in the next year. NCT is out since Friday so need to think about this badly. Really thinking about the Opel though. I think its the nicest looking of the lot in my opinion, and spacious inside.

I must consider starting a buying thread me thinks!

There is so much middle ground between fixing your car and buying a 151 car.

As an astra driver, do you not die a little every time Claudia Schiffer tries to convince us that GM stands for "German Motors"

But an Astra doesn't break down :D I'd like to know how much she got paid :D

You know she was pushing the Xsara (not in the traditional sense) back in 1997

I didn't know that so she must like cars or money. I'm not gone on the new Hyundai's, the I30 is so similar to the Astra

    hi all,

I have a 02 VW polo. I recently broke its engine though it has tax and NCT done.
Would they take my car in, because its anyway gonna go for scrappage..??

    Thanks in advance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I could be wrong but I think it has to be driving but ring around the various dealer brands and enquire. Of course you could always just roll it into the dealer and say nothing. :pac:

isn't this offer well gone at this stage?

I presumed the poster is looking at a 162 reg. I'd imagine similar offers will start up again in the next month or so.

    Hi All,

I started calling a number of dealerships regarding this. I told them clearly the car's engine jammed and will have to be towed and brought in.
After around 20 calls I made to different brands and dealers, Kingstwon motors agreed to take it and provided 3500 euros from scrappage against a new hyundai i10.

It was a great deal for me as the car was not even worth 200 euros after what happened to it. It took some time and energy, but was surely worth it

PS: This all happened last year but replying in case its useful for someone.

    Thanks
