A kick ass stereo. Preferably a 1970s vintage like pioneer or some other Japanese monster pumping out 150 watts RMS, loud enough to power the point depot.

As appealing as the idea of a man-cave is at times, honestly I can't see myself every bothering with one unless I have a lottery win. In an ordinary house there's simply too many purposes for space (e.g. a playroom, study, utility room, garage, workshop etc.) that would be more important to my family or myself.

Were I ever doing one, I'd want to build an old-style arcade machine with an emulator for loads of classic games, perhaps one of the coffee table style ones. A pool table and a draft beer tap would be essentials.

For me it would have to be a media room

Cinema screen or other big 3d TV
    Sonos wireless music system
    High end laptop
    Big comfy chairs couches

Kind of thing you might see in that show million dollar property listing

Soundproof walls. Keeps the tunes in the cave, and more importantly keeps all the other noise out.

Why don't you just put all that stuff in your house forget the cave.

I think man caves are called home offices these days :)
At least that way you can claim the fun stuff is for work to her indoors.

Being realistic, a 50" TV is not poverty spec.

I was half joking but it's almost there nowadays, definitely in America where it's not uncommon for people to get 65", 70" and 75" TVs now. Those sizes are starting to be more available here now as well but just a little overpriced. I only have a 55" myself but I'm looking forward to upgrading to at least a 65", 75" being the cut off for the room/viewing distance.

    That's a Child-Cave, not a Man-Cave. A Man-Cave should feature a full Snap-On tool cabinet, a powerful workstation computer, a decent steel-lined workbench and a couple of interesting motorcycles.

Lots of interesting - and extremely expensive - stuff on that article.
However I don't get the point of having a full bar counter - unless you wanna play barman with your friends, which may or may not be a bit awkward

I have a slightly better solution 'though: do not get married, and you won't need a man cave at all. Happines can be leaving a screwdriver on the kitchen top and not be nagged about it by anybody :D:D:D

Best place for a mancave is definitely in the basement where one can be truly isolated from the other occupants of the house, though may be problematic for most as basements are still not really the done thing, which is a real pity in my book.

In any case my own cave is equipped with the following:

    * 46 inch LED TV with fed from multiple satellites connected to a Bose soundbar and 2TB NAS.
    * Local wireless router to ensure a strong signal.
    * High spec PC with 2 large monitors and wired gigabit ethernet to NAS.
    * Large cupboard housing various parts of bikes and other pieces of sports equipment, and other bits and pieces such as bottle openers and ligthers. May or may not also contain a bottle of something which I have been given as gift, etc.
    * Wall mounted IR heating panel and air dehumidifier. Damp can be an issue in the summer.
    * Furniture which is currently pretty basic and dated.

    Next steps:

    * Larger TV! I'm thinking 65cm is probably as large as I can go without getting a headache.
    * Decent surrond sound system -> bought one recently but sent it back as the 2 wireless rear speakers kept clicking everytime they kicked in, and also hammered my WLAN signal.
    * Fridge

If one genuinely has a dedicated room like a man cave then it's almost a no brainer to pick up a projector that can throw a 120 inch image on a wall or screen for the same price and quite often a lot less than a 50 inch flat panel.

That said in another year or so one can watch the movie in a virtual Savoy number one in ones own man cave on ones new VR headset for about €400 if you already own a half decent PC:D

This months AVS Home Theater of the month is pretty awesome. The guy literally built his own cave, themed on batman. Has its own hidden entrance and all.

Don't forget the addition of the home micro-brewery, an essential piece of kit IMHO ;)

In the process of turning the attic into a man cave of sorts.. Already carpeted, shelved and a stira in place. Put up a dartboard, a projector and screen and the old ps2 for the craic. It also houses a mini workbench with a vise and a variety of my second best tools. (My shed is 30 miles from my house... Long story)

Still sitting on camping chairs though... But there is a fridge for when I'm banished up there for extended periods!

A man cave is certainly something I want at some point.

Im a collector of horror stuff and limited release / collectors box sets of horror movies so I have some absolutely gorgeous stuff that deserves to be on display.

A large tv or projector is a must, I dont drink at home but that may change in the future if I have kids and what not.

Id be quite happy with a shed or cabin at the end of my garden like Heli describes above so we shall see what happens in the next couple of years.

My man cave is the local old man pub. One of the few bastions of masculinity left in this world.

I guess my shed is my "man cave" though Id never call it that :) Its got every tool I own stuck in its own little place on the wall. Picture Willy Wonka's "great glass elevator" but bigger - and instead of buttons you have tools. And in the middle of the whole place you have my current go kart.

For some reason the idea of putting in a seriously kick ass stereo system does not apply to me. I have one in the house and one in the garden. My "cave" just needs an old battery radio with a slightly bend metal rod aerial. Perhaps it brings me back to the early days of my dad Tarmacing roofs with an old Transistor radio hanging off his belt. A real workshop is not a real workshop to me without a crap radio only BARELY getting in a good signal.

    Good thread !!

After my wedding in June this year im thinking of getting an extension at back of house. Half extension, half conservatory type yolk! Nothing too huge.

Keeping it basic, 3 seater couch, small chair, wee corner stove, book shelf, ipad/stereo type thingy, small fridge, tv and PlayStation (though rarely played). Thats it.
I'd have a scotch cabinet but will be too cold out there!!

    Thats perfect for me :)
