Weekend in Madrid

I'm headed over to Madrid in 9 days time with a group of friends. There will be 6 of us. We're staying not too far from the Reina Sofia Musuem.

Does anyone have any tips on where to go/what to do?

So far the plan is to go to Archaeology Musuem, Mercado San Miguel, possibly the Egyptian temple for sunset depending on weather and hang out in the Retiro. Will probably hit up the rooftop of the Cortes Imgles for a drink too while it's still bright. At night, I was thinking of just bar hopping and eating tapas in either Chueca or another fun area.

Any particular bars/restaurants that aren't to be missed? Or other fun, laid back activities?

The Prado is a must-see if you are into Art Galleries and it's beside the Retiro. The Thyssen is also in the area.

One tip is to bring ear plugs in case you are staying on a street with busy nightlife. Some streets can be very noisy with revellers until 6 in the morning.

Another tip about metro tickets is that you can share 10 journey tickets within your group. These tickets cost a dirt cheap price of €12.50 for Zone A [ METROBUS

Metro Zona A and Metro Ligero (ML 1), https://www.metromadrid.es/en/viaja_en_metro/tarifas/billetes/index.html ] which should cover all the areas of interest [ http://subway.umka.org/maps/madrid.gif ]. To share the 10 journey, the first person sticks the ticket through the machine, then leaves on top of the machine for the next person to stick it through and so on for the rest of the group. A different ticket is needed for the airport run [ €4.50/5.0 ].

Im not into the whole are scene but when I went over for a week, we checked out most of them anyways because most are free and sure why not when your there.

I recommend going to Parque de Retiro and going on the boats, its super chill and great fun when there's a group of ye, bring a picnic too, not sure if its open this time of year.

Go to the Flea Market on Sunday, its HUGE! Its kinda the same as most others but great atmosphere and some quirky things.
The Archaeology Museum is a good shout.

Dunno if it has to be said but hold on to your purse/wallet tightly, I thought I did but unfortunately my purse was stolen and ruined the day, so leave some at the place your staying just incase.

EDIT: If your going to a nightclub, beware that its not too far away from where your staying because the metro doesnt open until 6am.

This is a cool little sherry bar not too far from Sol, they have 5 types of sherry in barrels behind the bar and sell plates of olives, cheese and charcuterie and mark your bill down in chalk on the bar top. Don't take photos inside though as they don't like it for some reason. Has lots of locals in there too so it's not a tourist trap.

There's a great Cider Hall behind Atocha train station that would be good for a group, big long tables. All they serve is Cider, Roast Chicken and Cheese. If the weather is nice they've a lovely outdoor area too.

Love the look of the sherry bar! Will def have to check it out. Nothing beats sherry and olives and maybe some boquerones!

The Cideria also looks awesome but not with cider drinkers this time :(

Real Madrid and Rayo Vallecano are home at home in the football that weekend, if you fancy taking in a game?

I wouldn't be a Cider drinker myself, this is very different to Bulmers! There's a whole thing about pouring it from a height and it's just a great vibe and different, but if your mates can't get past the cider thing then sure there's loads of other places to go.

I hate Bulmers too but quite like English scrumpy and Stonewell or Dan Kelly's. Who knows, we're staying near Atocha so might end up there anyway! Not over-planning where we're going, just collecting lots of good options in different areas.

    Thanks so much.
