    Hi all,
    I was just wondering are there are any Tax advisors here that could give me an overview of what their job entails and/or daily duties are? Is it an enjoyable/fulfilling job as opposed to bring just a normal accountant? Thanks in advance!

    Wheather a job is going to be enjoyable and fulfilling really depends on you and what your interests are. As you would imagine tax work varies:
    - Prepare/review tax returns on behalf of clients
    - respond to Revenue requests and make submissions on behalf of clients
    - represent client at various revenue meetings
    - tax planning
    - drumming up business
    Depending on the size of the practice and so on, I say you could expect to spend a lot of your time in the first three in your early years. As you get more and more deeply involved it is very much about the law so if you enjoy law it might be a match.

    Will this interest you? I do not know... I can only tell you that it bored the hell out of me, but then so did accounting so I exited that as well!

    I'm in a firm, training in tax since I started (moving to audit this year for more experience)

    So far I have spend my time;
    • preparing and submission of personal and corporation tax returns for clients mainly for Revenue and HMRC (UK Revenue)
    • dealing with many different Revenue queries (e.g PPA1 forms, offsets to other tax liabilities, partial Revenue audit (my manager would deal with those but I might have to gather Revenue records together etc), registration of taxes, corrections to be made for accountancy periods for filing returns, dealing with refunds for clients & many many more. These are just some of the ones I've been dealing with in the last few weeks.
    • I do deal with clients directly but again, because I'm not qualified, a lot will go to the client from my manager.
    • I do the odd filing on PAYE (we have a payroll dept. separate to tax), VAT, RCT returns. But I could deal again a lot with dealing with overpayments or queries which arise from Revenue about returns filed.
    • control of the client lists and sending the audit managers and partners CT returns to be submitted.
    • applying for and chasing up on tax clearance certs for clients.
    • DWT returns for clients.

    I enjoy what I do. I never thought I would work in tax until I got offered the position. I was happy that I took it. I find a hard to get around the more complex issues, my manager deals with these. But I know with time, I'll learn more. I'm continuing to learn everyday. I hope to do the tax exams after I finish the accountancy exams.
