    Hi,

I just got an email off the above address and wondering is it legit?

    Email says:
You have received a secure message from Revenue

Read your secure message by opening the attachment, securedoc.html. You will be prompted to open the file or save it to your computer. For best results, save the file first, then open it in a Web browser.

If you have concerns about the validity of this message, contact the sender directly.

Any queries on the enrolment process, on obtaining a password, on how to send secure emails or general queries regarding the secure email system may be sent by "normal" email to securereg@revenue.ie.

When I go into that, I'm being asked to sign up for the Secure Email service.

It's the second email I've got off them. First one was asking for my P60.

Revenue never get you to click on a link in my experience. They will always tell you to log into PAYE anytime to read the message.

Yup, had seen that. I rang them after the first email I got and that was Feb 11th. Will ring again tomorrow just incase since it's related to 2014 tax, just incase I owe or am due money, but was hoping others might have seen that email address and know if it's dodgy or not. Since it's @revenue.ie, wasn't sure.

it didn't matter that it's showing @revenue.ie anyone who would be fairly techy can spoof that so no matter what email its sent from will show as from revenue

In general, Revenue only want to exchange emails with taxpayers (and agents) via their secure mail system.

This is a real email I received (as an agent) on behalf of a client:

You have received a secure message from Revenue

It's not quite the same as the one you have.

The first time (2-3 years ago) I came across this Cisco securedoc crap I couldn't believe it was what actually legit (referring to nomperes post not the op)

Seriously, open a random encrypted html file, load a java app??? No thanks.

Not then, not now. html attachments are stripped before they hit the mailbox. Does anyone responsible for mail systems not consider html attachments to be risky???

All of the scams I've seen come from addresses like revenue.gov.ie or irishrevenue.com, things like that.

The one you've got above is 100% legit and it's to do with data protection, if you send anything sensitive over the open e-mail (ie your PPS / a scanned P60) or if Revenue need you to provide something potentially sensitive they have to ask you to register for their secure e-mail service as it's the only way they can guarantee the security of your information.

The key in the two links re scams above is Revenue will never ask you to provide info unsolicited over e-mail. If you've e-mailed or called Revenue looking for a review of your tax or to claim a tax credit, Revenue often will contact you to provide more info if they need it to complete your request.

    Good morning,

can confirm that securereg@revenue.ie is a legitimate address for revenue.

This is a typical e-mail I receive on a regular basis from revenue

Revenue are working hard to ensure that any sensitive data they receive and send is properly encrypted and can only be read / sent by authorised users.

    Hope this helps

See my response and response from nompere below. This is legitimate and is an effort by Revenue to encrypt sensitive messages, especially when submitting sensitive info like PPS and VAT nrs etc.

Trust this puts your mind at ease
