Hi all, we have a 2011 1.6 blue motion from new and had to leave it with vw main dealer yesterday with above problem... €1000, repair.
Not really happy with this as the guy insisted it was a 5 year old car.. ?? It's exactly registerd as 4 yrs this week.
Is this a common problem ?
Is it something that is should be warranty (even in uk) as it may help the upcoming argument. Really appreciate advise.
    Thx.

I thought VW were offering goodwill towards the cost of replacing these as it is quite common on them? Does the car have a full VW service history?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,217 ✭✭✭moonshadow

    Thx bazz,
Full service history , goodwill enquiry is going in , but reckon it may be 50% which I feel is derisory. Have been vw customer since 1998 with new vehicles all the time , but have been burnt by them before.

I think the main battle here is getting the dealer to push them all the way otherwise you need to suggest that you will be taking your local custom elsewhere going forward.

Did you buy it off the main dealer that you left it with?

How many miles on the car, and was it a UK car?

I thought it was the EGR cooler that was problematic not the valve itself but could be wrong I would price around even a Skoda dealership. My local VW garage tried to shaft me on the price of a part even though I had a new car I ordered. I got the part much cheaper from a Skoda garage afterwards with a better service too..

Cooler and egr valve all one unit. Op if you have VW service history with the garage, you should get 100% parts and if lucky 50% labour. Done one on a 2011 passat this morning and that's what the customer got as far as I remember

No the main vag dealer we purchased from is now defunct, but has been serviced fully by current dealership from first service.
New irish car, 110k km .

Then I'd be damn well expecting some goodwill on that!

    Good luck!

Well VW are supplying the part as goodwill , garage costs will be €540 no goodwill .

Happened to me on a Golf last month, VW declined to contribute to the cost as

    1. It was a UK import and
    2. 110K Miles (179K Km) which was deemed excessive on a 2010 reg car.

    Cost 1,020.

Had to get the egr valve replaced in a vw transporter , luckily it was still under warranty .

Valve price isnt the killer its labour cos of where VAG installed it, right down the back of the engine a a complete nightmare to get at.

Just spent €1400 on my transporter last week , having been a VW commercial and car man for over 20 years the time has arrived , last Passat cost an arm and a leg to fix up after 3 years and the transporter has had two gearboxes , 2flywheels , front drive plus all the usual track rods bushings etc.
Looking at a new Renault van atm 5 year warranty , as for the car I dunno...

so the garage are chargin 540 to fit an EGR valve and clear some fault codes? Whats their hourly rate because at my calculation they are charging about 6 hours labour whis is madness.

Have any of you talked to a good Indy?
I know with the parts and labour, a BMW timing chain change can be done for less than the BMW labour.

Sorry guys for commenting on an oldish thread but just thought I'd add in ha. A family member of mine has a 2011 VW Passat 2.0 TDI 140 BHP. Last December he left the car into the garage for a full service and they came back and said that there is a problem with some egr coolant leaking and that it would cost 1100 to fix it. She said that they were going to ring up Volkswagen and ask for some good will off them. This guy point blank refused to pay for it and told them they can keep the car and he isn't going to pay to fix a fault that shouldn't be there etc etc. Anyway turns out Volkswagen rang back 3 days later and said they would cover the whole cost of it. According to the girl in the office, if the unit wasn't changed the car would have lost power eventually and the check engine light would appear on the dash. Previous 2006 1.9 TDI Passat had a few problems too with steering column lock and water pipes etc. Nice cars though and generally not that troublesome. Just not what they make themselves out too be either.

If you bought new, I'd be talking to dealership boss and making it clear that you expect a contribution from them on the labour side.
50 percent on labour seems to be what is done and 100 percent in some cases.

Hi Mick, where did you get it fixed.
    170 Euro sounds very cheap.
    I have a 2012 Passat B7 140HP
    170.000 km

EGR Cooler is faulty and got a cost estimate of 870 Euro.
Also I have "Secondry cool unit pump" faulty. 115 Euro.

Get it somewhere done it cheaper or good chance that I could get a goodwill. It is a UK import from a 3rd party dealer in UK.

Would this part normally be covered under warranty or is it a worn tear part ?

Different circumstances tbh. the car was not long out of warranty with only about 50k km bought new.

I got the EGR valve replaced in February of this year in a local garage beside me in Dublin. The car broke down last Saturday in Galway and was towed to a VW garage nearby. They have told me the EGR valve needs to replaced again and if it was changed already this year, then it was likely a faulty valve. Do I have any comeback with the garage that changed it in Feb? Is this possible to go again so quickly?

It's a 1.6TDI 2012 Passat. Don't want to spend the money towing it to Dublin and then have to pay for the full repair anyway.

8 year old thread, better to start a new one. But I’d advise getting that car out of the VW main dealer ASAP and bring it to a DPF/EGR specialist who will code out the EGR and you’ll never have to worry about it again.

And I don’t see why you’d have any comeback against the mechanic. It was 8 months ago.
