    Hi Guys,
I am returning to Ireland from Australia after being away for 6 1/2 years. I am importing with me a 2013 Toyota GTS 86.
I got my first quote today of 3,800 euros !
I haven't had my own insurance in Australia due to the fact that I work as a Project Manager and am provided a company vehicle, therefore I don't have any personal no claims over the last six plus years.

Does anyone know who the best (i.e. cheapest) insurance companies to get quotes would be ?

    Thanks

call them all. There is no other way to know. What the cheapest company for me is might be the most expensive company for you

no nonsense tend to be the cheapest. tesco used to be comparable but they are no longer taking new customers. brace yourself though, car insurance in ireland is very high compared to most eu countries. when i moved over from the uk mine tripled and that was with 8+ no claims bonus.

As it stands you have a zero no claims bonus - can you get confirmation from Oz that you were named / had full time use of a company car - this could be used for some sort of intro bonus. You car would be in the high class when it comes to rating, so expect to pay a lot regardless - contact a broker, there are niche schemes out there that will cater for the car(though maybe not lack of recent local driving experience) Asgard / ARB / KennCo are some to try, accessed through brokers. No bonus is going be a killer though, so see if you can arrange documentation from Oz

Car type is going to take out a lot of bigger insurers who just don't want to do that car grouping. Start looking to Kennco, ARB.

I brought my car here from Australia with me and the insurance was the hardest thing to get buy far. No insurance company would accept my Australian full no claim bonus as it wasn't in the "correct" format and the Australian insurance company wouldn't help either. To cut along story short in the end I had no choice but to pay the bs 2500 euro.

Thanks for the answers above guys, I am in touch with a broker now but I am afraid the insurance is going to cost and arm and a leg. It ridiculous, I am only paying $1200 here for one year fully comp and I could be paying the equivalent of 5 times that much in Ireland.

There also looks to be an issue with this type of car not being sold in Ireland, the GT86 is sold in Ireland, I have the GTS version. The engine etc are all the same, its just the interior that is different, touch button start / stop, built in sat nav, radio with touch screen controls and leather trim.

I will post again on any update I get, cheers.

Why does it matter what marque/model of car you were driving?
It shouldn't matter as long as your no claims come from a passenger car, not a moped/minibus/mining-truck?
Someone is doing something wrong here.

The OP is bringing their car home with them so in this case it does matter. Insurance companies are very funny around "grey" imports. Grey imports that were never meant intended to be sold in the EU. They are probably going on statistics they have on the number of claims they paid out on them. Anything that strays from what they consider normal they tend to load.

    OOh. Must read betterer.

An import of a model not sold in Europe and no NCB. Yikes.
Is there anything to be said for another mass?

Will be getting Ripped off with your insurance and you'll prob lose your arse for VRT. Wanted over 3k for me to bring in a 2011 Sirocco from the north. But try first Ireland, and i believe the other place i know of my friends getting imports insured is Asgard but will need to confirm that for you

OP will/should be vrt exempt if he has owned and used the car for 12 months prior to importation.
