As the title states I am looking at a 2001 Porsche Boxster or 2006 Lexus IS250.

So has anyone ever owned these vehicles. I know the rear plastic window give trouble in the boxster but that can be fixed with a hard top :)

**Pictures are not mine. They belong to there respective owners***

    Pork.

Lexus is most likely a much better car as far as reliability goes. I have no idea though.

Odd that it's a choice between these two considering they are at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Well I have always wanted a Porsche and the Lexus is pretty powerful at 204bhp and is practical.

After speaking to Porsche owner they seem very reliable

I looked and test drove a lot of boxters a year ago and I was surprised how uncomfortable the drive was. It's really fun to drive, just uncomfortable.

Parking is a bit awkward due to bad rear visibility, soft top is noisy, equipment is limited. It has two 'boots' neither fit my golf clubs.

Even with all that wrong with it. I nearly bought it, cracking car for a good summer but I couldn't live with it for summer.

Just asked my boss there as he was looking at them last year. Really liked them, but didn't go through with it in the end. Said that you need to look out for the bore liner problem. Which is a serious issue prior to 2002.

Porsche. You'll regret it later in life if you don't.

I mean you can buy a 4 door saloon anytime, a convertible Porsche is a bit different though.

Is the boxter mid-engined? Must be sweet on a windy country road.

Yup its mid-engined, fantastic around corners, MUCH lighter than the 911 so corners unbelievably.

By all accounts the Boxster (and Porsche 911 996) engines are a bit like Russian roulette.

Porsche all the way for me too. A good family friend has an immaculate 2001 Boxster S. It's a cracker of a car and they go really well.

Engine work and suspension and brakes are expensive, tyres also.

That being said if you have the means to, go ahead. I never classed it as a poor mans Porsche.

Times like this I think of the quote from a James Bond movie....

"There's no point living, if you can't feel alive"

Having said that I have considered Porsche and been put off by the engine issues linked in previous thread, if you want fun in a reliable 2 seater soft top get a Mazda MX5, smiles all the way.

Interesting article...makes me wonder should I wait a few years, save a few more quid and buy a 911  Are they really prone to all them issues?

I've always wanted a Porsche and the Boxster is a good cheap option on the ladder up the the Cayman or 911!

I can always keep it for 6-12 months and sell her. Least then i can be happy that I has my dream car

But all these issues (or most of them) apply to a 911 also.

Cayman too afaik...best bet is to go for an air-cooled 911 or a water cooled 911 Turbo, neither option will be cheap though!:o

Yep. Sadly, German cars are far from being the most reliable these days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,126 ✭✭✭KwackerJack

Yes the German's may build nice cars but they really need to focus on reliability!

Even so I am in favour of the Porsche over the Lexus.

Having said that the auto IS250 comes with the cool flappy paddles on the steering wheel :-)

I need to test drive both but I fear I will be pulling my hair out after as to which one I buy.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

If you're doubting between these two, I'd say you'd be happier going with the safe choice ;)

I am looking at an IS250 tonight. Porsche not available to view until weekend of the 14th

IS seems to be getting rave reviews online!

If it's a car for fun rather than a daily than get the Porsche. If it's a daily, then it's gotta be the Lexus.

    I will be both.

I test drove 2 IS250 tonight, the first one was kinda rough and needed front discs and pads pretty badly, That will tell you something right away!

The second was a lot better. very clean and looked like it was well looked after. Very smooth yet powerful, tiptronic paddles on the steering are a gift. Extra buttons for more power and a snow button, for eh snow! Great looking illuminated white cluster.

Nice and snug in the buckets seats, not to small but just perfect for comfort and to hold you in when on the twistys. Back is a bit small but its only myself and the little fella.

Very impressed by the 06 IS250

Careful about the brakes of IS250s. It is easy to assume that discs are warped due to temperature change etc but calipers are prone to be sticky due to rust. If there is vibration in the pedal, changing pads/discs will solve it for first couple of hundred kms then it will come back again after warping your brand new discs.
