Much thought has been given to their function since that film came out. My own view is that they're not shells as such but just a fashionable design of a series of dispensers. It's probably a bidet type arrangement. The first shells sprays water on the relevant area, the second dries it with a blast of hot air. The third one is for those difficult times (post vindaloo perhaps) & dispenses lotion of some sort.

One thing I don't understand about Demolition Man is why Denis Leary and his rat-burger eating buddies have a pristine muscle car from the 70s in the sewers. What would they need it for down there? How did it get there? How come it's so clean when everything else is so filthy?

Well, now - assuming the shells are made of a strong plastic there's no reason why they couldn't be cleaned and recycled not to mention -- I'm overthinking this now, amn't I?

Overthinking pop culture memes is half the reason the internet exists, don't sweat it. While it would be possible for them to be recycled the image shows them being flushed, suggesting they're disposable.

Can't stand the woman, terrible actress...almost as bad as Julia Roberts.

However, she is perfect for her role in DM.

I actually watched this last night after reading this thread. Denis Leary was okay til he basically broke character and did one of his Bill Hicks influenced routines.

It's kinda amazing how Demolition Man has really become this cult classic, it was more or less panned when it first came out, but now it's infinitely quotable, you get so many references to it on After Hours. Wesley Snipes made an incredible villain, and the whole thing was just fantastic satire.
