Jammed UPC window mechanism - cannot open window

    Folks,
We have a UPC window from Munster Joinery (approx 15 years old) where the handle turns but doesn't engage with the rest of the window gear mechanism to allow the window to open.

The handle is working and looks like this:

I've taken off the handle and the gear mechanism inside the window has broken as per below image:

Note that I have not removed the gear mechanism to take the picture i.e. the window cannot be opened in order to replace the whole gear mechanism - any advice on how to open it would be welcome.

The square receptacle is shattered but the side plate mechanism will still be intact. Go at it with a flat head screwdriver and try to simulate the function of the rotating square part with the screwdriver in the direction that you would turn the handle to open. Have done it a couple of times with success. Basically you are just trying to move the flat bar a little over 1cm.

Yeah they saw a niche in the market as Microsoft wouldn't do double-glazed :D

When i am doing these jobs for customers i find it best to remove the glass and then use a plastic pry bar to give me room to slide in a flathead screw driver to move the latch to unlock the window.and then just replace the click and re-glaze the window.
