garmin edge issue

During my cycle yesterday in the lashing rain then snow i noticed on the display of my garmin edge 800 that it was saying "this accessory is not supported" , I checked that the usb and sd card covers were closed ,the usb cover was not closed 100% , this can be a pain to close properly , anyway i pressed ok on the screen and everything worked as normal .
So when i got home I tried to upload my ride on the computer and it wont connect , although it does charge through the usb . Now when I power it up I get the message "xm receiver is not supported" .
Everything else is working fine , it picks up cadence , H.R. and satellite , it just wont connect to computer.
I tried the usual tricks like leaving it a bag of rice , on a rad, in the airing cupboard etc.
Anyone got any other ideas or know of any place that repair these , its out of warranty so i think a replacement is out of the question.

Give it a good old dry with a hairdryer if there is any residual dampness, use a cotton bud to clean the interior, do the same to the usb cable and if it still doesnt work try a different usb cable.

You are correct, this is due to the water that got inside, it has happened to me in the past as the cover is a bit crap, but I have always taken the above action asap and it has sorted it for me.

You can change the settings to save the rides to the SD Card and then remove it and upload via a card reader as a very last resort if the usb port is proper fooked.

I haven't looked at the screws on my 800, but I opened the back of my 500 and you need a tiny star drive screwdriver to get the screws out, I'd guess the 800 is the same. If warranty is not an issue, I'd open the case carefully and leave it somewhere warm to dry out. I did this with my 500 after I left it in a jersey pocket that went through the washing machine. I didn't have the right tool to get the screws out and managed to only get 3 of the 4 out with allen keys, but I prized it open enough to dry out.

May be totally unrelated but since day 1 my 500 will charge with any USB cable but is only detected as USB drive when I use the cable that came with it.
Been meaning to check it with another computer to find out for sure if problem is cable(s), laptop or garmin, but haven't gotten round to it. Guess I should before I mislay the working cable :-)

I'll see if I can find a torx head screwdriver small enough and give that a go , thanks.

The USB and card slot on 800 (presumably 810) is completely sealed with epoxy from the inside. It there was any corrosion, it is most likely on the contacts that can be accessed from the outside.

I'd give them a flush with clean water from a syringe (in case some road salt has found its way in), dry with a piece of cloth and hairdryer and clean very gently with a tiny piece of fine sandpaper or a flat mini file.

I wouldn't advise flushing anything electronic with water!! Isopropyl alcohol or some electrical contact cleaner should be used or a dry air jet. Maplin is a good source for these things

Isopropyl alcohol will not dissolve salt. Garmin 800 is designed to occasionally come in contact with water on the USB port.

As you can see the USB board is completely sealed with epoxy from the inside (right side):

    Same here (800 vs 810):

Would you think if I sprayed a small bit of wd-40 into the USB port and pushing the usb lead in and out a few times would help or would it possibly cause more damage.

    Shouldn't do any harm.

Isopropyl alcohol is the way to go. It has fixed many similar problems. Great for displacing stubborn water that normal drying won't get rid of.

And buy a new USB lead, once they get wet they can rust very quickly and then they lose data connectivity. And that even only from incidental contact with water inside a usb port or indeed in my case a bit of chewing by a toddler!
