DPF Sensor Focus 1.6 tdci?

    Hi All,

A colleague of mine who drives a 08 Focus 1.6 tdci 109bhp was driving yesterday and the car started to loose revs and it cut out. She tried to start it again after a while, it started but while idling it cut out again.
She then had it towed to a garage, Coby Autos near the red cow.

The garage has plugged it in and a number of faults came back but the main one being a faulty "DPF Sensor" the garage quoted 450 euro plus VAT to get it fixed.
However, they were not definite if that would rectify the problem.

I would have thought it would be the fuel filter or pump at fault but apparently the garage tried it with a fuel filter.

    My question,

    1) Has anyone heard of this DPF sensor being at fault and what symtoms it may have if it were faulty?
    2) Does 450 euro plus VAT sound expensive to have it repaired?
    3) Had anyone had positive or indifferent experiences with Coby Autos?

    Thanks in advance

My 10 Focus recently had an EGR value go on it.

Thinks it costs €330+VAT for the part, so sounds like a likely price.

The symptom I was getting was car going into limp mode.

    Thanks for the reply.

I know a bit about cars myself, especially Focuses as I've had a couple, which is why I'm a bit puzzled about the DPF sensor.

She said that her car did not go into limp mode just flashed up Engine malfunction on the dash.

She has left her Focus at the garage until she decides what to do.

    Can anyone recommend Coby Autos?

Or shine a light on this possible DPF sensor problem?

my car has 2 differential pressure sensors on the dpf, when one reaches a certain value with regard to the other it does a regen.
dunno what way the ford system works but iirc it cost me about 70 quid to have one of them replaced.

€450 plus VAT would be more like the price to have the DPF removed altogether, which I think is something Coby Autos are able to do.

As above, the differential pressure sensor for the DPF is cheap, less than €100 fitted.

Cant see how a new Differential pressure sensor would cost €450 fitted..
I wonder what they cost of a new sensor from ford works out at...

Tbh there are a few tests to be carried out (which i hope they did) before they go fitting a new differential pressure sensor e.g.
    https://euroesi.mazda.co.jp/esicont/eu_eng/mazda3/20060311105619/html/id0140b2805700.html

If it is the sensor that is at fault then they may need to carry out a forced regeneration on the dpf and worst case fit a new/reconditioned dpf.

    UPDATE:

Just had a chat with her again after she phoned the garage to confirm.

Yes, the price she was given of 450 plus VAT was actually for the DPF Removal, egr blank and to blank dpf/egr from ecu.

She was also told that although the engine management light wasn't on, there was fault codes stored that included 1. Fuel pressure, 2. EGR frozen 3. Ash Accumulation
She doesn't have the exact codes.

I think that the egr and DPF codes are old codes from last year as it was regenerated last May, plus if there was a dpf blockage wouldn't the car light an engine management light then go into limp mode? That's what happened a Focus I had that needed a dpf regeneration, as well with the egr problem, the engine management light came on.

But on her Focus, it just cut out which is more than likely a Fuel pressure problem and not dpf/egr related?

Could it just need a fuel filter? Or what other fuel pressure problem might it be?
There is no engine management light on.

    Thanks in advance!

Sounds like EGR to me. Have seen a few behave like that. The EGR shares a power feed with several other sensors and if it shorts out it causes the engine to cut out. It's very easy to rule in or out, just unplug the EGR and start the car, if it runs ok then you have found the problem.

Fuel filter or DPF issues generally don't cause the car to cut out at idle, more likely to cause running issues while driving.
