    Morning All,

My Airbag light needs to be reset, it failed nct on this, I have to drop it back for a visual in order to get cert in a couple of weeks, would someone be able to do this that had similar problem, or how did they go about it. Based in south dublin ( Sandyford ).

    Many Thanks ...

Typically the airbag light comes on as a result of a fault like a split cable or lose connection. You could try disconnect the battery to reset the fault but it is likely to come on again later.

You don't say what year Golf but in the older ones I've come across the problem is usually a connection under one of the front seats. The light can come on if one of the seats is moved back or forwards for example .
As it's a safety related issue I think you have to get the light 'turned off' by someone with a scanner . Even of the connection is 'repaired ' the light won't then go off without a scanner .

Yup, it wont reset even if fault is fixed. Get someone to see if it resets, it might just be a glitch (common) , if its not a glitch the code will let you know where the problem is. Steering wheel clock springs are unreliable in older vw's

If it's the 3 door could be more likely the movement of the seat caused the connection to be lost, push the seat fully forward and back to see if you can spot any lose connection underneath it.

The issue is not an obvious one to see. The internals of the yellow connectors just lose contact for a split second, causing the light to come on.

Your best bet is to get the plugs cut out and the wires soldered together. Just getting the light reset will be a waste of money as it will trip again, and probably at the NCT if they move the seats.

If you DIY it, be careful when soldering the cable. If you cut too much off, you will change the resistance of the circuit which the ECU will read as an irregularity with the airbags. The best DIY guides state to add in some extra wire after you chop the connector out. I did this on one side, but not the other and sure enough the side which didn't have the extra wire still tripped.

It is not a 3 door car problem, it is just it can crop up more often on a 3 door as the seat moves so much.

This will read and reset your faults for you but if the fault is still there it will reappear straight away again

Also be careful with connecting /disconnecting airbag cables and or soldering their wired. If you are going near them , disconnect power to battery for a few hours beforehand. There is a possibility of setting the airbag off

Just a word of advice, I bought one of these to aid in troubleshooting of a 2000 polo 6n2, it would not read or reset airbag faults for this car (even though the write up said it did.) What I bought then was a VAG cable and downloaded VAG.com off the web. This worked a treat, gave specific info as to exactly what was wrong, after I repaired the fault,(clock spring) it then reset the light. I have used it many times since on VW,s, it is a better buy in my opinion.
