Flashgun lessons in Cork City [request]

    Hi Guy

I've recently got a Metz 52 AF-1 Flashgun as a gift to accompany my Canon EOS 600-D camera.

I'm finding it tough going to get the most of it! Some limited success here and there, but I must admit that I don't always know what I'm doing.

If anybody could give me some hand-on guidance I would be very glad.

Portrait and 'social' (nights out etc) photography would be the areas I'm most interested in.

    Thanks.

Here is an example of when I think I got it 'right'. Correct me if I'm wrong.

"Ah Grasshopper, you know not what you ask"

Do you want to use the flash on camera or remote?

How well do you understand exposure and light control?

Hello CabanSail, it would be to use the flash on camera.

I'd say I understand the fundamentals of exposure. For example, I know how to read a histogram and how one goes about correcting over/underexposre in tools such as camera RAW and Aperture for Mac.

    You have many options.

Probably the simplest is to use TTL and let the system work out how bright the flash has to be. The camera should keep the shutter speed below the sync speed. You can shoot it directly, diffused or bounced. Ronan Palliser explains it well here.

Cool. Thanks the link. Shall study it.

I'll keep an eye out for some 'hands-on' lessons and guidance to help put things into context for me.

For all sorts of Hand On help you should look into joining a local camera club.

I know technically you have a Metz rather than a Canon speed light, but most of the info applies to any flash gear.

    Buy, read, practice, sorted.
