Sometimes I just don't get it

Just thought I'd share something, a muse, if you will. Running a long time now and most recent race was enniscorthy 10k which I trained for and was happy with the result. That was 3 weeks ago today. Since then I've done a 10k training run where I live the following Sunday and last sunday. On Friday gone I did 7k. Yesterday I went off with the family, went to Eddie rockets had a feed of sliders etc around lunchtime, was home at 5 for the rugby reached into the fridge ( you know where this is going) and had 11 bottles last night, no further food. Woke up this morning had nothing but a bowl of porridge and off I went in torrential rain on my 10k route and knocked 2 minutes off my 7 year old "training route" pb. I've run this route many times training for various races and at various times during the day. I'm not any fitter or lighter than normal. Any similar experiences?

I kind of don't get what you are saying.

There are too many variables; when was the last time you ran that route? were you fitter then? did you give it 100% or just jog it? was it windy, hot cold etc etc?

Did you try to race that training route or just go out and run it as normal?

I have never actually tried to race a training route so I really wouldn't know what my 'training PB' on any particularly route was. I don't get this 'running a PB by accident' thing tbh

I run this route most weeks, i aim for the same pace if I'm not training for anything just to keep fitness levels up. If I am training I will push myself.Today I didn't push myself.

I wasn't racing. Surely you would have times to monitor your progress?

I'd definitely put this PB down to the 11 bottles of beer tbh. Must try that old trick myself.

Yes, if I was doing a tempo run or 10 x400m or whatever I would use this to monitor progress, but I wouldn't use a single run route to do so.

I'd never just go out and run a route as fast as possible and even if I did, there would be lots of variables like amount of time taken to warmup, amount of beers drunk, chineses eaten, farts done etc. Too hard to monitor progress off one run given all the variables :)

If I can inspire just one person.....

But please - let's not confuse Carlsberg with beer...

Could be you get very nervous before a race and use up alot of energy.
I usually find two days after a drinking session a disaster, maybe you where still drunk?

I know exactly what you're talking about. Last summer I 'accidentally' ran a 10k pb (by approx 3 mins). I was in Glasgow for 3 days at a friends wedding. Ate and drank all round me, flew back to Dublin on Sunday and had a race on the Monday.
Had decided before I went near the race that I'd just run it and get to the end and not bother racing at all cos there'd be no point.
About 3k in I realised that I actually felt grand and decided to push on for the craic. Yeah it hurt, but I happily did it with no burnout and was thrilled with my first ever sub 50 time.
I put the success down to going into the race with no expectations, paces, or pressures. I generally get wound up to the last and I'm sure that does me no good.
