    Hi all,

My 14 year old is into his tech. For Xmas we bought and built a gaming PC (thanks again to the members here for their support and advice) and now he's been given an old Toshiba NB 100 Notebook by a friend who was gong to throw it out. http://www.notebookcheck.net/Toshiba-NB100.12668.0.html

It runs fine on XP but I'm wondering what would be the best set up for it? He just wants to use it for web browsing and maybe have it as a way for a friend to play Minecraft with him at the same time as he's playing on his Gaming PC.

The spec's of the machine are:-

    - Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP 3
    - Intel Atom CPU N270 @ 1.6GHz
    - 1.32 GHz, 0.99 GB RAM

Is he better off leaving XP on it or would it be worthwhile putting Win 7 or 8.1 on it? If so can someone link to the Reddit site where you can buy Windows keys? (I tried searching without success)

If anyone has any other suggestions for pimping this little yoke to get the max out of it that would be much appreciated.

    Cheers.

No minecraft. It wont hack any gaming.

Dont put 7 on it, if anything find a very lightweight linux distro to run on it. Vista and 7 need 2GB of ram to function ok and 3 to function well.

TBH my smartphone is far more powerful than that, its not worth any investment.

I was thinking he could use it as an XBMC media centre and to Chromecast Netflix etc?

    Waste of time trying?

I quite like the idea of putting Linux on it. I've no experience of Linux but it might be a good way for him to experiment with and learn Linux.

If you can get your hands on a "free" copy of windows 7 starter id try it on it mate it be no harm if it didn't work but I've used it on a few older cp machines over the years just to get a small bit of extra life out of them for basic web browsing.. Even tho its an old model the most basic version of windows 7 does not use any of the aero graphics ect that a fuk blown version did and it is what came on most of the little small Intel atom netbooks.
As far as xbmc is concerned you would be surprised how much grunt that needs to work smoothly.

Uninstall all the unnecessary data, install vlc player and use it as a media center by plugging it into any new pc through the vga cable. I used my old HP laptop with a broken screen for about 2years on my 32"tv (after the screen broke) for playing dvds, movies, music and basic internet. Worked like a charm.
