HP Notebook Issue

I hope that one of you Notebook wizards will be able to help a computer novice.

Mid 2014 I bought a HP255G1 for one of my children. Five weeks or so ago it failed to launch after logging in and would then not shut down either so back it went to the retailer who returned it to HP. After just over a month away it came back saying a fault had been found with the AC adapter and this had been fixed.

Yesterday on its first outing since return it had still not launched after three hours (a dialog box referring to personal settings did appear) and following CAD intervention it was then still shutting down two hours later. So back to the retailer who advised that HP would simply have run a diagnostic of the hardware so the problem was probably a software one which of course was not covered under warranty. So off it has now gone for a health check.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues, what should I expect to hear back and any suggested course of action?

    Thank you.

This happened to my PackardBell laptop which I bought recently, I think it's a software issue.

I did a fresh install of windows 8.1, I presume that's what your's is running? and that solved it for me.

Thank you for the info, yes it is 8.1. It will be interesting to see what the health check throws up. How did you get around the fact it would not launch? When I checked the Task Manager there were no processes running.
