Why does Laim Neeson have to adopt an American Accent in his movies?

    And Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn't?

Is it so difficult to add it in the script that he's Irish. It's very hard at times listening to him.

It rob's him of his character.

Irish accent is hard to understand, why would Americans pay to see a movie where they can't understand what is being said.

and his american accent is woeful,

"this is no time for dick measuring john"

He considers himself American anyway, doesn't he? He's a monument to current day typecasting. Saw a trailer for a new film with him last night, looks like Taken bleedin 7.

To talk like American Neeson you just have to end words with "Uuur"

    "Jurst gimme back my daughtuuur!!"

Probably so the Americans can understand him. Christian Bale has to do interviews promoting his films in his American accent for the same reason.

I really doubt American's can't understand an Irish accent.I never had a problem over there talking to people over there so I suspect the average moviegoer would have no problem with an Irish accent either.

Neeson used his own accent in The Grey - mainly because he connected with the character and the script at a meaningful level and asked director Joe Carnahan could he play the role with his native accent.

I reckon when it comes to material like Taken 3 he doesn't really care either way.

I agree - Schindlers List should have been rewritten so that Oscar Schindler came from Loughrea, just so that Liam could keep an Irish accent.

I thought he was from Ballymena?

Schindler? I dunno, was he not german? If he was from Ballymena, they're missing a trick not having a "Schindlers Day". The accent could be tricky though, might end up sounding like "Shinners Day".

He pretty much does ya. You tube it, I think it has to be seen to be believed. Strange because in other films he really can nail accents

Nothing worse than a nornironmurican accent , especailly if you play golf .....on Neeson , the only film I found him reasonably watchable in was SChindlers list.

To be fair to OP Sean Connery has got away with using his own accent in so many inappropriate roles down the years. Soviet Sub commander - Scottish accent, Indiana Jones' Dad - Scottish accent, Irish American Police Officer - Scottish accent. Greek king Aggememnon...... And so on

"Hey, Im James Bond / The Terminator, Im going to speak in my own accent and if anyone has a problem, Im outta here"
Neeson isnt that big a name.

? None of the actors who played Bond or Arnie were big names before they first took up the roles

ha yeah fassbender goes totally irish on the beach

I was reading an interview with some irish lad who was to interview in NYC for an irish role - the character was from the same town as the actor. So he talks normally as he would at home. "nobody talks like that, stop faking the accent" - rejected

I hate how people act like Liam Neeson is some super hero. "Oh you wouldn't want to cross Liam Neeson!"

He's an actor. He's an old man. His roles are all scripted in case you haven't realised that yet

    He trained Batman.

I was speaking about Connery. He was playing a British agent so a Scottish accent was appropriate. After that he was such a big name he probably never had to worry about changing it for roles, and then it just became his trademark.

Arnie was playing a time travelling cyborg killing machine, so his accent was perfect. Again, he then became such a big deal, he didnt really have to worry about changing it and it became his trademark. Plus, I doubt he would have been able to adopt a different accent anyway!
