Do people buy catwalk fashion?

Any model on the catwalk I've seen is wearing clothing that neither seems suitable for any occasion nor affordable to people with more sense than money, so how exactly do these designers make money if these clothes aren't suitable for normal human usage or within the price range of a fraction of a percentage of people?
Are these designs only a showcase to show off the designers 'talent' and vision and they make their money from designing and selling more useful garments or is it a case that if only one person buys an item, they whole cost of the project is covered with a tidy profit thrown in?

People that can afford them do buy them. But I think it's also to showcase what's "in" for the season so designers for high street retailers etc can copy them. (I think!)

Also as far as I know there are different types of collections that are shown in fashion shows. Ready to Wear is what ends up in the shops.

I'm not an expert on fashion, so I could have made that all up! But that's what I always gathered..

Well the haute couture stuff is obviously ridiculously unwearable but people still buy it anyway. Namely a few mega rich clients who have it made to measure for them and pay extortionate prices for this. That's what makes it worth their while to show it. Maybe that's what you've seen?

The ready to wear stuff is normal clothes, looks good and can be bought as shown on the runway. A lot of these collections sell out so it is very popular, and the high street stores would usually copy these looks.

The "Dublin Housewives" reality show participants seemed to think it was ok to wear this gear on a daily basis!
