Car damaged while parked

Hi all, my wife was parked in Dundrum shopping center today around 15:00 for almost an hour. Came back to find some damage to rear of the car. I have studied, examined, analysed the damage and I cannot figure out how it might have occured. I am almost sure another car didn't cause the damage because it is just a crack to the bootlid, the size of my thumb. Went to my local Garda station, not much help, which I can understand but they took some details from me and said they will be in touch if they hear anything but I won't hold hope. I will have to replace it from my own money in the meantime and hope for the best result. This is my first car accident in Ireland and I would like to know will I have to inform my insurance of this or not? I am thinking I won't because no injurys and the car is still working fine. Thanks for looking.

Looks unfortunate but I think the best thing to do is forget about it/fix it and move on. Definitely no need to be informing your insurance company.

Could it be a shopping trolley, you could ask the shopping centre of they have any cameras near where you parked

Could it have been a 4x4 or truck backed against it?

I don't think so, because I think if so the damage would be larger than this...

I have not thought of that. Might be a possibility. I was thinking of going back already to check cameras but didn't today, will tomorrow

That's going to be a right pain in the hole to fix because its carbon....

Are you positive it happened in the centre? hate to say it but it may be your car hit something reversing somewhere. Like a bar or pole, or corner of something. May have been something higher up off the ground that it didn't damage the bumper or set off reversing sensors (if you have them). I would be astonished if Dundrum didn't have cctv in every corner of the centre.

terrible reply, some people take pride on what car they own. Cars are expensive to repair, sadly the majority of the population don't give a flying **** that they dinged someones bumper or broken off a side mirror. The owner is going to have to track down replacement parts and money doesn't grow on trees

how is it a terrible reply? There is no point informing insurance. The repair is bound to be around the cost of the excess. Checking cctv in dundrum is highly unlikely to pick up anything the op can use to find a potential candidate for the cause of the damage. This type of stuff happens me all the time. It's infuriating, but there is little that can be done. I have an E200 only a month. Paint work is excellent. Yesterday, I noticed someone had scuffed the front bumper. This more than likely happened in a car park. The spaces are too small and usually the room to reverse out of a spot is very tight too. This combined with careless arśeholes results in damaged cars. And it's more often suv and mpv drivers doing the damage.

Looks like damage from a pellet gun

I'd say the wife did the damage and just letting on someone hit it.
It'd be fairly embarassung looking back at CCTV and seeing the wife back into a bollard/pole

Which Maserati is it? A GT?

    I'm jealous!

Had similar happen with my own car, an Astra GTC in a very bad spot (rear wing). Someone hit it with a large wheelie bin while it was parked over night in a private car park. They had CCTV but it did not show up anything clearly hitting it.

Had to mend it myself as the repairs weren't much more expensive than the excess on the insurance. A right pain and very annoying.

Dundrum definitely have cctv, tell them time you were there and they should be able to look it up.

    Best of luck

This guy fixed my surfboard and my kite board. I can barely see the repair. He works with carbon.

I know; it will be a very expensive fix or very expensive replace :(

Well she did just notice the damage when in Dundrum, and says it wasn't there beforehand but it might be possible what you say. I have not been back but will do on Monday or Tuesday.

No, she didn't because she would tell me if she did.

Well, I will go back and ask to see CCtv anyway. If I get a result, great, and if not I will have to suck it up :(

Thanks, I will look at that. Have been looking at replacements already and they aren't cheap so if I can get good quality repairs done that that will be better

Best case scenario - the gel coat is able to be fixed. Worst case scenario - it needs to be sanded back and sprayed with laquer.

Hard to tell from the picture but if there's no real damage to the carbon, you might get away with a gel coat repair. It's fairly straight forward if thats the case.

Take a look at Galway carbon too
