I have bought a HDD to use with my smart tv, i have a macbook and when I copy all my tv and movie files onto the hdd and plug the HDD into the tv it doesn't display the folders and just shows all the video files in one block. This is annoying as finding anything is a pain. I have tried using different formats for the HDD, like NTFS, exFAT and it doesn't make a difference. Does anybody know how I can get it to display the folders on the tv, I am thinking it has something to do with Linux and Mac OS X.

I think this is a limitation of the smart tv. I have a Sony TV and it can read my NAS that has my movies sorted into folders. However the TV just sees all the movies in one place and ignores the folders.

I agree that it is very annoying!!

Oh god, I was hoping that it was a Mac issue, thanks Paul

I have my media on and eternal hard drive connected to my iMac. Have Plex media server running on the Mac. My Sony smart TV upstairs in the bedroom can see the media files and reads and lays them all perfectly.

Does it show them in folders?

It shows the file structure I have on the HDD. Movies straight forward enough. Tv shows by show-season -episode.

Sorry just read your op again and yes it does show them in folder structure and not one big list of files.

Thanks Adox, I'll have to figure out why I can't get my HDD to show folders on the tv,
