So I'm in TY at the moment and have to choose my leaving cert subjects next week. I've already decided to do history and geography. I know there's a lot of coursework but I've always enjoyed them and I'm good at learning things off by heart. I heard there's a lot of essays but writing essays is something I'm pretty good at so I'm not worried about that.

I'm just stuck between biology and chemistry. I've always preferred biology over chemistry but have been told biology is easier. From 1st to 3rd year I usually got better marks in biology but the majority of my year were the same as it was pretty easy yet I heard its much harder at leaving cert. I find chemistry more interesting and the teachers are generally better than the biology teacher.

What would you recommend and how did you find these subjects if you did them? Thanks

    Hi Namaw!

I'm in TY and I've also just chosen my subjects and to be honest I would chose what you are interested in. The junior cert science course is a fraction of what sciences are like for the leaving cert. Leaving cert biology has so much information that needs to be learnt. However, apparently you don't have to really understand it well as long as you learn it. Chemistry, In contrast, Involves so much understanding, and a fair bit of learning off. Personally, I have chosen both as well as physics because it is what I am interested in, and I am eager to find out more about them.

Also, If you in anyway see yourself studying a science course in the future, you may study all the sciences in the first few years. Chemistry is called 'The Central Science', because it is used in biology, Physics, Engineering, etc. Having chemistry will provide you with a decent foundation if you see yourself studying science at third level.

good luck with whatever you choose :)

If you don't mind learning off information Biology is probably the way to go. There is learning off in Chemistry too combined with lot of calculations and complex ideas that need to be understood.
