Sorry to hear about ur dad. My advice is to do it. Plenty of options to do it to fit ur circumstances. U need it for national reserve, young farmers 25% top up, to avail of higher infrastructure grants, agri relief/ stamp duty (though i think one of thses doest apply in the case of inhertritance) and stock relief. As the other posters said u can get away without it and they are right but ur limiting ur opportunites.

I think some of the newer schemes look for it like the beef discussion group one for example. Also to qualify for young farmer top up of 20% on shed grants etc you need it.

Also you'll learn a bit and meet lads at the same stage as yourself.

Hi Jdi...thing is though..i think if a future exists on land/farming etc for me, then its towards the organic side..basically im on a small farm(25)acres by the river..its quite beautiful, and through the last couple hundrd years its done its animal rearing/potatoes/veg/milking/beef etc...
I would ideally move towards self sufficiency and possible smallscale lakeside café/retreat. which in my mind means looking for benifits of past lifestlyes too... Im not sure id ever be puttin down any more sheds...
    Thanks for your adivce
