He died playing football in the same place where the Boards team has played many seasons, and is a good friend of one of our players.

It's shocking to think that a young man, out playing a game of football with his mates, is not going home to his young family.

    Rest in Peace.

RIP and condolences to his friends, family and loved ones.

I love a game of 5/6-a-side myself and the idea that something like that could happen on the pitch is disturbing.

Have to admit I'm not familiar with him, but he must have been a talented sports writer to have gotten a gig with them straight out of college.

Anyway, that's beside the point. My thoughts go out to his family. We all think we're permanent. Just plain odd to think of how suddenly we can slip away.

Getting ill suddenly during something totally run-of-the-mill and then dying shortly thereafter, at the age of 36 - the universe can really suck at times.

It's something that is scarily resonant for many: a young man, father, playing ball with friends. An awful thing to read. RIP.

    gentle exercise

But playing football with your pals isn't extreme exercise.
Any death triggered by physical exertion (even e.g. those ultimate marathons) is exceptionally rare.

    Making pancakes is it? :pac:

The physical and mental benefits far outweigh any risks.
A study done by Prof Peter Krustrup and his team ... found that soccer as a whole provides .. health and fitness effects that are at least as pronounced as for running, and in some cases even better.

..one study asked 47 men with high blood pressure to either play soccer or to run for an hour twice a week for three months. It turned out that playing soccer was the smart move, because those who played it saw their blood pressure fall by an average of twice as much than those who decided to run.

...cholesterol levels fell in the soccer group – an effect not found in the running group. Another study even found that bone density increased twice as much playing soccer as in running.
A clear victory for soccer but the benefits don’t just stop there.

..according to yet more of Prof Peter Krustrup’s research ...men and women playing soccer .. experienced an overall high level of 'flow' during the experiment.

If you’ve not come across the term ‘flow’ before, it’s essentially the optimal state that arises when you are fully immersed in a challenging task. It is the feeling you get when you are fully focused, engaged, motivated and happy in whatever the activity is that you’re doing.

Does it really matter here to be honest?

When you're hear news like this, it puts a lot of things into context. RIP, I can't imagine what his family are going through right now.

As tragic as this death is the risk of playing sports is far outweighed by the benefits. The reason this is so shocking is because it's incredibly rare. If it was a BASE jumper it wouldn't be so shocking because the element of risk of death is a given.
