What happens to enable fibre?

    Hi,
I'm getting fibre broadband next week. Up until now I've been getting just under 3Mbps, but I've been assured this will increase. I'm just wondering, what physical changes are being made to increase this. Where is the fibre involved, not as far as my house I'd imagine. I'm assuming its just that the connections to the local exchanges have improved but its the same old copper to my house? They say they have to install a new router as part of it

    thanks

A technician visits your house and installs a new faceplate, then he visits your local cabinet to move your copper telephone line from the old cabinet and switch it over to the new cabinet - the new cabinet is powered by fibre optics.

Basically the fibre goes as far as your road side cabinet then from the cabinet onwards its fibre only . The new master socket it just to facilitate your new router as far as I know .

The installer will fit a new NTU (master socket), this may not be where you would like the modem. If you are an Eircom customer they will fit a data port extension or redirect the cabling to to move your main socket to where you want it. If you are a Vodafone customer you're out of luck, master socket stays where it is whether it suits or not.

What happens when your old master socket wires are no longer exposed, you do not know where they are due to renovation work. Do they search the path outside your door for the copper ?

They'll put an NTU where they can access the cable coming in. How much effort they put into it depends on which provider you signed with. With Eircom they'll do whatever you want (within reason), with Vodafone not as they'll not get paid for it.

    Thanks for replies.
Currently my phone line comes into the corner of my hallway downstairs. The phone terminal box is here - and ADSL splitter goes into that. I have the router on the wall in the same location. I assume this won't cause any problems.

However, I do have a 2nd extension line, and the alarm system tapped into the incoming line (inside the terminal box). I'm with vodafone - will the engineer reconnect these for me?

Yes, they will just replace the NTU with a new one, sort the alarm and backfeed the existing phone extensions so they are filtered. You won't need filters after but you'll only be able to use the modem in this socket

Thanks guys. On a side note, I've been told I'll get up to 15Mbps, I hope its close enough to this, its hardly likely I'll only get 4 or 5, is it?

How long is a piece of string, nobody knows until you get it installed and post your line stats.
