Found a site called http://www.saynoto1890.com/ which gives alternative numbers for many companies 'Low Call' numbers.

Many mobile companies on bill pay will charge you for using one of the non geographic 1890,1850 and 0818 numbers even if you have minutes left on your plan. This site has a list of geographic (i.e national numbers) alternatives which would be included in your plan so hence no charge.

Not going to save the average joe much money but when you are on hold for 20 mins it could save you a few quid. BA style.

ComReg has decided that from 1 December 2019 all calls to numbers starting 1850, 1890, 076 and 0818 must be included in bundles and allowances on the same basis as calls to landline numbers, and from 1 January 2022 the 1850, 1890 and 076 number ranges will be discontinued in favour of the 0818 prefix.

And it will be amazing how many companies and businesses will revert to an 'ordinary' phone number now that this racket has come to an end...

These businesses were told by their telecoms provider that using 1850 or 1890 numbers made these calls cheaper for callers. This was mostly true before the days of inclusive calls and before the days of mobile phones, but that was a very long time ago.

The problem is that regulation failed to keep up with those changes when they arrived, and telecoms providers continued to mislead the users of these numbers about the true costs incurred by callers.

ComReg were very slow to act, more than two decades slow.

But you are right in what you say.

Just last week I noticed GasNetworks (who currently use 1850 numbers) will shortly swap to freephone 1800 numbers. They recognise that for most of those callers who are without inclusive calls, the changes coming on 1 December 2019 represent a considerable price price rise. It's just a shame they failed to recognise that during the previous twenty years that for those callers with an inclusive call plan, usage of 1850 numbers resulted in those callers being ripped off by their phone provider.

ComReg now needs to do some work to make callers aware of the benefits of inclusive call plans, and also work towards inclusive call plans always also including calls to mobile numbers.
